In her grief, Molly seeks help from her childhood friend George, now the village policeman, but no one can find Petal. The only clue is a letter from London, where Cassie once lived. Despite George's reluctance and her growing feelings for him, Molly resolves to go to London in the hope of discovering the missing child. Arriving in the big city, Molly quickly learns it's a dangerous place for a country girl on her own. But there's hope too - in the Blitz-ruined East End, she unexpectedly finds friendship with strangers from Cassie's past and, with handsome, mysterious workman Charley, the possibility of something more. A brilliant story!
By Suze Lavender
Molly Heywood is the sweetest girl in Sawbridge. Unfortunately she doesn't come from a happy home. Her father is an aggressive man and he's bullying Molly and her mother. Molly runs his shop for him and he doesn't pay her for her work. It's Coronation Day 1953 and Molly is helping with the festivities in the village. Her friend Cassie and her six-year-old daughter Petal don't show up, so Molly leaves the party to look for them. When she arrives at their home she finds Cassie dead on the floor and Petal is missing.

Because the police aren't doing much Molly tries to find Petal on her own. This means she has to leave Sawbridge and her childhood friend George behind. They're keeping in touch, but they aren't as close as before. Molly has to find her own way in life and for the first time she's allowed to have some fun. She finds a job in London. That is also where she finds someone who knows more about Cassie. Molly doesn't find Petal there, but she meets some lovely people. She has a boyfriend as well. Only her stay in the big city isn't forever. Molly still wants to find Petal and she needs to find a career for herself. Even though people have warned her, she keeps searching for the child. Is this actually safe and will she find out what happened to Cassie and Petal?

Without a Trace is another great book by Lesley Pearse. When I read the first sentences I knew straight away that I would love this book. It's both a gripping and beautiful story. Molly is such a kind and sweet girl, but she's also smart and resourceful. She doesn't give up, even when life isn't good she's positive and cheerful. Molly's character and spirit are making this story special. It was great to follow her steps.

Cassie's secrets aren't predictable and she's a mysterious lady. Petal such a bright and sweet girl, but because people are biased she doesn't get the priority every missing child deserves. Molly would never judge someone and she's kind and compassionate. Life never makes her bitter. She doesn't give up on her friend, I loved how Molly keeps solving little bits of the puzzle while she's trying to build a life for herself. The ending is unexpected, but really good. I enjoyed this book so much, I highly recommend it, it's absolutely brilliant.

Miracle on the Hudson: The Extraordinary Real-Life Story Behind Flight 1549,

The remarkable true story of Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger’s heroic crash landing in the Hudson River, as told by the passengers who owe him their lives.

Millions watched the aftermath on television, while others witnessed the event actually happening from the windows of nearby skyscrapers. But only 155 people know firsthand what really happened on U.S. Airways Flight 1549 on January 15, 2009. Now, for the first time, the survivors detail their astounding, terrifying, and inspiring experiences on that freezing winter day in New York City. Written by two esteemed journalists, Miracle on the Hudson is the entire tale from takeoff to bird strike to touchdown to rescue, seen through the eyes and felt in the souls of those on board the fateful flight.

Revealing many new and compelling details, Miracle on the Hudson dramatically evokes the explosion and "smell of burning flesh" as both engines were destroyed by geese, the violent landing on the river that felt like a "huge car wreck," the gridlock in the aisles as the plane filled swiftly with freezing water, and the thrill of the passengers' rescue from the wings and from rafts—all of it recalled by the "cross section of America" on board.

Jay McDonald, a thirty-nine-year-old software developer, had survived brain-tumor surgery just two years earlier and now faced the unimaginable.

Tracey Wolsko, a nervous flier, suddenly became other people's rock: "Just pray. It's going to be all right." Jim Whitaker, a construction executive, reassured a nervous mother of two young children on board, only later admitting, "I was pathologically lying the whole time." As the plane started sinking, Lucille Palmer, eighty-five, told her daughter to save herself: "Just leave me!"

Featuring much more than what the media reported—moments of chaos in addition to stoicism and common sense, and the fortuitous mistakes and quick instincts that saved lives that otherwise would have been lost—Miracle on the Hudson is the chronicle of one of the most phenomenal feel-good stories of recent years, one that could have been a nightmare and instead became a stirring narrative of heroism and hope for our times.

From Publishers Weekly
In a stunning display of skill and steely nerves, pilot Chesley Sullenberger managed a Hudson River water landing in freezing weather, with no engines, to save the lives of every single person aboard his aircraft. Aided by New York and New Jersey emergency responders steeped in post-9/11 training, Sullenberger and his crew did everything right when everything around them had gone horribly wrong. Interviewing survivors of flight 1549, husband-and-wife journalists Prochnau and Parker piece together a detailed, moment-by-moment account of the accident and its aftermath, getting inside the heads of ordinary people who demonstrated remarkable courage and humanity. Anyone who remembers the dramatic 2009 event will be riveted by this account, even with a forgone happy conclusion. Notably absent is the testimony of Captain Sullenberger, who saved his insights for his own book, Highest Duty, but this passengers'-eye-view narrative makes an absorbing, inspirational record.

From Booklist
So far, in the publication of books about the dramatic ditching of US Airways Flight 1549, the pilot has told his story (Chesley Sullenberger’s Highest Duty, 2009); the plane has had its story told (William Langewiesche’s Fly by Wire, 2009); and now most of the passengers tell their tales. Veteran journalists, the authors interviewed 118 of the 150 people onboard (but not the flight crew). Like the proverbial witnesses to a traffic accident, none, it seems, saw the same thing despite experiencing the same in-flight emergency, so fear and confusion in the passenger cabin are the dominating continuity in Prochnau and Parker’s narrative. It is otherwise as kaleidoscopic as temperament and life experience make any collection of strangers. Some naturally made indelible impressions by their reactions to what seemed like imminent death: men cravenly shoving their way to the exits; others gallantly assisting the evacuation. These accounts of how people behaved will certainly prompt readers to imagine how they might have responded, so expect great interest in the audience that actually heard the words, “This is the captain. Brace for impact!” --Gilbert Taylor

Passengers of Flight 1549 Tell Their 'Miracle on the Hudson' Stories
By David Kinchen
'Miracle on the Hudson': Survivors of US Airways Flight 1549 Recount Their Stories of the Famous Crash

Reviewed By David M. Kinchen

The news coverage of the 'Miracle on the Hudson' of Jan. 15, 2009 has focused on Capt. Chesley B. (Sully) Sullenberger's skillful landing of his 75-ton Airbus A320 on the Hudson River after bird strikes knocked out both his engines.

A month after the landing, a Greenwich Village pub, the Half Pint, created a cocktail honoring the heroic captain, "The Sully," which consists of two shots of Grey Goose vodka and "a splash of water." And, as noted below, he has his own book about the "Miracle" and his life before and after it.

"Miracle on the Hudson: The Survivors of Flight 1549 Tell Their Extraordinary Stores of Courage, Faith, and Determination" (Ballantine Books, 272 pages, $25.00) by William Prochnau and Laura Parker gives Sully his due, as well as First Officer (co-pilot) Jeffrey Skiles, who saw the flock of geese first, moments before Sully, who took over the controls. "Miracle" concentrates on the experiences and backgrounds of the passengers, 108 of whom were interviewed by the two reporters. The 108 were among the 155 passengers and crew on board the Charlotte, NC-bound U.S. Airways flight that frigid January afternoon.

The year started out with a miracle, with everybody surviving, despite some scary rescue moments, but the authors note that by mid-2009, more than 500 people had died in commercial airline crashes around the world, making it the worst year for aviation fatalities in seven years.

On Feb. 12, a Colgan Air commuter plane crashed near Buffalo, NY, killing all 49 on board and a man on the ground. On June 1, an Air France Airbus A330 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Brazil, killing all 228 on board. A month later, another Airbus, a Yemenia Airlines A310 crashed into the Indian Ocean near the Comoros, killing all but one of the 153 people on board.

Prochnau and Parker are not only meticulous reporters, with their detailed summaries of the backgrounds of the passengers, they're also skilled storytellers; the book reads like a novel, say "The High and the Mighty" published in 1954 and written by the late, great Ernest K. Gann. Or at times like a waterborne disaster like Paul Gallico's "The Poseidon Adventure."

The survivors are a casting director's dream team. There's the obligatory plucky older woman, 85-year-old Brooklyn born Lucille Palmer, headed for her great-grandchild's first birthday. There's Greenwich village architect Martin Sosa and his wife Tess, traveling with a nine-month-old baby and their young daughter. There's the so-called "Belk Six", five women and a man representing the Belk department store chain, returning to Charlotte from a New York buying trip.

We learn of the stresses of "road warrior" bankers -- Charlotte is home to Bank of America and Wachovia -- lawyers and other frequent fliers, some of whom changed their pressure-cooker lives after the events of Jan. 15. One of them, a lawyer, received a message after the rescue that he was being laid off. The actual layoff was delayed until two months later.

At times the authors, Prochnau and Parker -- both of whom have worked for The Washington Post -- seem to be padding out the book with discussions of the financial meltdown and its effects on the workers that weren't laid off. Still, despite this caveat and their sometimes florid prose, "Miracle on the Hudson" is a well-written, moving account of everyday people reacting to an extraordinary event that deserves the phrase bestowed upon it by NY Gov. David Paterson: It was truly a "Miracle on the Hudson."

Sully's book, "Highest Duty: My Search for What Matters," written with Jeffrey Zaslow, was published earlier this month. And on Nov. 10, Vanity Fair international correspondent William Langewiesche, who has written on flying from the perspective of a former professional pilot, will publish his "Fly By Wire: The Geese, the Glide, the 'Miracle' on the Hudson".

Langewiesche, who manages to explain technical matters better than just about any writer I've read, discusses the technology that helped Sully and Skiles accomplish their "miracle."

Which leads me to my pet hobby horse: why can't aviation engineers come up with a grille or screen to keep Canada geese -- which have wingspans of six feet -- and other large birds out of jet engines? My Ford Ranger pickup has a grille to keep objects from damaging the radiator, as does my liquid-cooled Honda Shadow motorcycle. As a matter of fact, there are guards that do just that for jet engines. I don't know if Boeing or Airbus uses them or has plans for them in the future. For a look at one that received a U.S. patent, click on: [...]

Not What I expected!
By Sarah the Reader
In full disclosure someone at my company was on this flight, so I was a bit more interested than the average reader. I've met him once or twice so I was very curious about his experience.

All I can say is "oh my", I truly had no idea how crazy it was on board that flight. I think everyone has some sort of fear of flying, particulary after this past spring when there were some really horrific air disasters. The writers do a good job at putting the reader right inside the plane and in a seat and eventually in the river. You can feel how frightening it was. I dont' think there was a passenger on that plane that didn't think they were going to die. I found it profound to understand all the ideas and thoughts that one thinks about when they believe they are moments away from death. I also found it interesting that most were just hoping for it to be quick and painless; they were more frightened, in some cases, of pain vs. death. Interesting!

I think the early part of the book and then the end are the best. The rescue became a little tedious and some of the story lines had me a bit confused. The seating chart at the beginning was helpful and I kept flipping back to it. (On that note, the photos were good, but I would have liked more. They were not color so that was a miss, this is 2009!) In spite of knowing the ending, I could not put it down. Overall I have to say it was a really good book and I can't wait to recommend. I would have given 5 stars but for some of the middle chapters that were a little messy.

The next time I see that man who works at my company I plan to let him know how much I enjoyed this book, even though he was only mentioned two times.

A true thriller-- amazing it really happened
By Robert L. Twiss
This is one of the best real-life yarns I've read in a long time. Great reporting. Great entertainment. The authors do a fine job of introducing the characters, setting the scene on that icy day, and letting you feel the emotions felt by the passengers on that plane. As a reader, I felt gripped. I almost ralphed at one point. If you love true-action thrillers, this occupies the top 10 of the year.

A different lifting experience
By Buba
I have been lifting weights for about 2 years on a multiple times per week basis. I have a home gym with both a Vectra machine and bench and free weights. I am a victim of Dr. Kenneth Cooper's aerobic revolution of the 70's and 80's, now with bad knees and bad ankles and chronic tendinitis and 2 herniated disks and spinal arthritis, which is what brought me to weight training in the first place. Over the years I have tried my own program, and I have purchased several programs from the "Guru's" and I pretty much always wound up either injured or I would make progress for a while and then it would seem I would start going backward. My most recent program was the New Rules of Lifting program which I have found to be a very good program. I've done that for a year and have made progress and remained injury free. That program is basically a two or three times per week program and I noticed that I needed the rest between sessions to keep improving. Sometimes I would go down to one session per 5 or 6 days and I found when I lifted next it was easier to make an advance. That couple extra days allowed a more complete recuperation. The exercises in the new rules program are basically the big 5 that is described in the Body by Science program, so over the course of the year I have developed good form with each exercise and a good knowledge of how my body feels during the lift and post lifting.

When I read this program it seemed to fit well with what I had been doing. I was of course skeptical of the 12 minute claim as the New Rules program is a timed set of reps across the exercises of about 45 minutes per session. In the New Rules program if you were anal about the timed aspect you would be forced into an anaerobic state of metabolism which I think is desirable in a workout. You can tell you've gone anaerobic when you quit lifting and ten minutes later your respiratory rate is still elevated. Your body at that point is working off the metabolic acid load it accrued during the anaerobic activity and converting it to CO2 and that extra CO2 load is being expelled by your increased resp rate. I could tell the by the way I felt that was the hormonal changes and increased metabolism associated with micro damage. I decided to give slo mo pumping as described in Body by Science a whirl. What it claims is true. I do 6 exercises bench press, reverse grip pull down, overhead press, seated row, squats and dead lifts, using the time under load method of accounting and trying to maintain 10-15 seconds during reps and it kicks my hind end. I go deep into anaerobic metabolism as I start huffing like a choo choo. I can also tell I am going deep into anaerobic metabolism because I get hot and start to sweat, signs of big sympathetic outflow and my heart starts beating like a trip hammer. I can tell the muscle micro damage and metabolic changes are greater with this slo mo methodology and I find I NEED a week to recover. I could probably compress that to 5 full days but the difference between 5 full days of rest and a week is not enough to push it. I'm still getting into the method trying to keep my form perfect during the time under load.

I am a physician, so I read with interest the physiology described in the book, and what is described in general is correct. I'm not sure I would hang my hat on the "fact" that we grow big muscles so we can run away from tigers, in fact to me that is an unlikely reason. If you have to run away from a tiger once a week in order to build big muscles its unlikely you are going to escape from being dinner. I think it is probably more steeped in a protective adaptation to inflammation response that lifting causes, than running away from tigers. The cardiovascular information is absolutely true in terms of this kind of training being better than the typical "cardio" kind of exercise. Your heart responds to the demand of your muscles. The whole reason you have a heart and lungs is to deliver 2mm of Oxygen tension to the mitochondria in your cells to provide for aerobic metabolism and to wisk away CO2 and metabolic byproducts. When your energy utilization overwhelms your aerobic potential that is when your muscles need more oxygen than your heart and lungs can deliver that is when you get a cardiovascular adaptation. Aerobic exercise by definition NEVER gets you there precisely because it is aerobic. If you ain't huffing like a choo choo (the sure sign of anaerobic metabolism) you may as well be sipping a drink by the pool in my opinion. I also believe every single beneficial claim proposed in terms of anti-hypertension and anti-diabetes improved flexibility and relief from back pain etc etc to be true. I have a pain management practice and I encourage my patients to do weight training to the extent they can, especially those who have managed to escape surgery.

So I think this plan is a worth while plan. I think if you are not well trained in weights you absolutely MUST have someone who truly knows about weight training train you. If you go off half cocked in this kind of program eventually you will hurt yourself. If you have a home gym like I do then I think you should spend 6 months learning how to lift with perfect form using something like the New Rules program before you venture into the Body by Science program. If you have a trainer he can adjust you during an exercise, but if you don't then you need to take a good while getting to know your own body and lifting with not other expectation than developing perfect form until it become second nature. Once you get into lifting it will become a long term part of your life so there is no reason to be in a hurry and not learn to do it right.

I think the exercises proposed are the exact correct exercises. I am a big fan of multi-muscle complex exercises like the dead lift as opposed to doing a billion of hammer curls with a dumbbell trying to increase the size of the third head of the triceps (total waste of time) I have also come to believe based on my experience over the past 2 years you won't see results quickly if you over train. In other words you need the time for the biochemistry to work and to let the damage you are producing heal. If you sprain an ankle (a big injury, not a micro injury) it doesn't get better in 2 days in gets better in 3 to 6 weeks. In other words you need to give your body the real time it takes to heal and that is based on its own physiology, not on some artificial schedule of lifts per week. If you are an old pro at lifting then before each exercise run over in your mind what perfect form means. I like to take 5 seconds to read a card I have prepared that forces me to think about the few things that define perfect form for each exercise. It takes me out of remote control mode and brings my focus back to the task at hand. Finally for this exercise regimen I have a big clock with a second had sitting right in front of each station, and I keep records so I can watch my progress.

As to the diet, I'm less involved. I like the idea of eating non processed food, but I think a ration of about 1:1:1 of fats, carbs and protein on a calorie adjusted basis is probably easier to maintain. I think the problem with processed foods is they tend to really concentrate the calories

Understanding the Author's Intent
By Dennis A. Brown
I purchased this book several years ago and used this method for over a year with excellent results. Having come back and read the reviews of the book, I would like to clarify several misconceptions:

This Exercise program is designed for two types of people:
1. People already involved in a very active lifestyle, and
2. People who are not capable or interested in spending a large amount of time in the gym.

For people in the Group 1, the authors insist that fitness is best achieved using the S.A.I.D principle; that is, Specific Adaption to Imposed Demands. They teach that fitness for any sport is best achieved by direct participation in that sport or performing sport specific drills. Their weight program is designed to supplement the sport program and is intended to maintain or increase strength while participating in the program. One is able to focus most of their time on the sport specific training without sacrificing a lot of time in the weight room, since a minimal amount of time is actually required to maintain or increase strength. Dr. McGuff uses specific examples of his BMX training as well as examples from other sports to illustrate how the program is meant to be used to augment sports training.

Long distance runners who want or need a higher level of cardiovascular training are not discouraged to "supplement" their strength training with long distance running or sprints. In fact, it is the other way around; those people who need or desire a high level of cardiovascular fitness do not need to sacrifice a lot of training time in also developing or maintaining a significant level of strength.

For people in Group 2, this program greatly reduces the amount of time spent in the gym while still producing the primary goal of increasing strength and providing a moderate level of cardiovascular fitness. It meets the needs of the elderly and very sedentary people in teaching them it does not take a large volume of exercise to achieve a moderate level of strength or fitness.

The authors never indicate that this type of training program is meant for bodybuilders. Their primary interest is fitness.

I hope this clarifies things.

Not as "scientific" as it lets on...
By Flint Michaelson
OK, this book has some things going for it that help set it apart from other exercise books out there. There are some decent footnotes and the main points all have some scientific backing behind them. It also gets bonus points for pointing out that super levels of fitness, low body fat, and big muscles do not actually equal high levels of health, longevity, and well-being. There is also truth to the author's assertion that there is a quality of life issue involved in the time spent working out when you could be doing other things.

There are a lot of other good points, too, but they are all pretty general and common sense. For example, "The Big Five" (or "Big Three") has been exercise 101 for over a century because of one simple reason: there are really only 5 natural movements that the human body can reasonably perform with weights: Overhead pressing, pulling/pushing down with the lats, pushing out from the chest, pulling into the chest, and standing up to extend the legs. It's also been long understood that the three pillars of weight training are training, diet, and rest: if you're struggling to make gains, you should look at all three instead of just training harder, which can be potentially counterproductive. Again, this should be common sense, but it must be said nonetheless.

However, for a book that's supposed to be so predicated on "science," the science that's presented is often poorly understood or perhaps even deliberately confused to support the author's own selling points and shortcomings of their training system.

Example #1: There is no scientific evidence supporting "Max Contraction," just John Little's marketing. None. The authors' emphasis on doing reps very slowly and counting the time spent under stress are also scientifically dubious with mixed support in the literature.

Example #2: There is no scientific evidence that says old Nautilus machines are conclusively better for fitness than free weights or other manufacturors, but the authors own a gym that specializes in this equipment so it's cited as being the ultimate in training. There is some truth to machine-based workouts being easier on certain joints, and they get bonus points in HIT because they allow you to safely go to failure without a spotter, but the authors barely reference those key points.

Example #3: The studies that are cited are often sort of thrown together. Some will involve elderly or extremely out of shape clients who would have benefited greatly from the introduction of just about any physical activity. The authors point this out when the studies in question apply to aerobic exercise as a reason not to trust those studies, but fail to keep this in mind when studies on similar parameters agree with their own conclusion.

Example #4: If you look up pictures of John Little and most of his clients, you'll mostly find a group of fairly average looking men with very few impressive physical specimens. You'd be hard pressed to tell if some of them work out at all, and I think most people at least want noticable gains from their gym experience. Little asserts time and again that success in sports and bodybuilding is mostly because of genetics and that less than 2.5% of men have the "genetic potential" to build large muscles. However, if you go to just about any gym with a reasonably large clientelle, you'll see several amateur bodybuilders who show that the genetics necessary for this kind of size are not so rare, if in fact they have any "special" genetics at all. Little's "12 minutes a week of max contraction" disciples tend to look absolutely puny by comparison.

That's what I found most disturbing about this book: the misrepresentation of science in the book's emphasis on "genetic potential," particularly the role of genetically determined levels of myostatin as the holy grail, when it comes to building muscle. While myostatin inhibition does help produce large muscles with little bodyfat, the science simply does not say what the authors assert it does. That section is badly written, poorly researched, and misleading.

For examples, the book says that professional bodybuilders refused to be tested for myostatin levels because it may harm their endorsement deals, when in fact many (such as the FREAKISH Ron Coleman, who bags millions in endorsements) were tested for a variety of genetic differences and the results usually came back that they were, in fact, fairly average. Only a couple of examples of genetic irregularities were found and those came from lesser known bodybuilders--most famously, "Flex Wheeler," who has extra muscle fibers. The science just didn't find that bodybuilders are necessarily genetic freaks when looking for the things that it expected to find.

But the myostatin discussion gets worse when discussing myostatin inhibition in racing whippets (and the rare, super muscled freaks known as "bully whippets"), the authors say that "Bully whippets" win most of the races. This is the exact OPPOSITE of reality: Bully whippets are typically euthanized by breeders as puppies because they perform very poorly in races. Their added bulk slows them down and they tend to be injury prone.

That gets to another point the authors overlook: high levels of myostatin inhibition is not associated with greater athletic performance. In fact, myostatin-inhibited mice have been determined, pound for pound, to have weaker muscles than typical mice and much more prone to tendon and joint injuries. Belgian cattle have major problems dealing with stress, are more injury prone, and are also weaker, pound for pound, than typical cattle. It remains to be seen how the handful of positively identified humans with the special genetics that the authors say will make them champion bodybuilders will turn out.

The authors also hint that myostatin inhibiting drugs, their perceived holy grail for supplimentation, were stopped by pharmaceutical companies "for no reason," perhaps even because it may cost them sales of other suppliments, but the truth is that all the drugs that were tested were having potentially lethal effects, such as causing enlargement of the heart. Even then, a couple of myostatin inhibitors were sold as bodybuilding suppliments for a while in the 2000s, but they never caught on because they proved worthless. I don't know if any of them are on the market today.

All of this casts doubts on this book's "scientific" marketing angle. If you follow the authors' advice you may become fitter and happier, as their suggestions will help you achieve and maintain a modest level of fitness, but take the authors' discussion of genetics and unusual training techniques (like "Max Contraction") with a healthy grain of salt.

If you want to get in and maintain a "normal" baseline level of practical fitness with an average body type, you could do a lot worse than to do what this book says. However, if you wish to be a bodybuilder or athlete, you should look elsewhere my friends.

Losing War, The: Plan Colombia and Beyond (SUNY series, James N. Rosenau series in Global Politics), by Jonathan D. Rosen

Critical analysis of Plan Colombia, a multibillion dollar US counternarcotics initiative.

Plan Colombia was an ambitious, multibillion dollar program of American aid to the country of Colombia to fight that nation’s recreational drug industry. First signed into law by President Clinton in 2000, the program would, over a twelve year period, provide the Colombian government with more money than every other country in the region. But how successful was Plan Colombia, and is it a model worthwhile in applying to other countries? In The Losing War, Jonathan D. Rosen applies international relations theory to understand how the goals and objectives of Plan Colombia evolved over time, particularly after the events of 9/11. Various individuals, including Álvaro Uribe, the president of Colombia from 2002–2010, and George W. Bush, argued that Plan Colombia should be used as a model to help other countries combat drug trafficking. Plan Colombia was not mentioned in the Obama administration’s 2011 budget proposal and no longer exists today. Rosen concludes that the policy failed to make substantial inroads in curtailing drug cultivation, production, or trafficking, thus calling into question the value of applying the same strategy to other countries, such as Mexico, in the present or future.

YOU GOTTA READ THIS ONE!!
By Bike Book Reviews
I love all of the books I have read by Charlie Richards (believe you me that is a ton) but I have never melted over a character like I did Sekani, he was sooooo cute! I need a fruit bat now!

Sekani escapes from captivity during transport and ends up taking refuge in a tree on Borscht's land, and he wonders why the big man smells so good! Is Sekani willing to trust the big man to save him from the people hunting him? What will happen when the man that smells sooo good learns what he truly is?

Borscht is the master of his coven, and when he goes to investigate a disturbance on his property, the last thing he suspects is to find a cute little fruit bat that seems to find him irresistible! When he stops to think he is startled to realize that this little bat may be his beloved!

Join Sekani as he discovers good and not so good foods he has never had growing up in captivity, and when he discovers a bed bounces when you jump on it, it is so cute it hurts! You will enjoy the story of these two men learning each other and fighting to make it work! When they rescue Sekani's friends what will become of them and just how much will Sekani miss them if they go away?

You will get all these questions and more answered in this one friends, and such a dose of cuteness you just might have cuteness overload (though I don't think there is such a thing)! Thanks Charlie for taking a chance on a very cute bat and making it work and then some! I received this product in exchange for my honest review.

Totally awesome read and can't wait for the next one.
By Sinfully
Borscht is a vampire and rules a small coven consisting of family members. He likes to keep to himself and hates having to work on spreadsheets. He and his family have top notch security to keep their territory safe because there were many outsiders that considered a small coven was ripe for takeover. When his brother alerts him to a possible security breach, Borscht worries that the intruders might be human hunters. Apparently they were, but they weren't looking for vampires, they were looking for a bat.

Sekani is totally adorable, both in human and in bat form. He'd never known life outside of a cage and had been kept by scientists for years before he managed to escape. From his posse in the trees above, Sekani watched as a huge man (Borscht) takes out the four hunters easily, but then is worried when the man seems to want to take up the hunt himself. For some reason Sekani doesn't have a problem with being found this time.

"Talking softly in a language Sekani didn't understand but sure loved to listen to from this guy's tongue, he watched the man wiggle his fingers a bit in invitation."

This book is so cute. Yes it's a true mate story, and it is horrible what Sekani had to go through because of the scientists. But the little sweetie hadn't even had an orgasm before and that situation was written so well and with such caring.

"Never in his wildest imagination had he thought he'd be explaining sex."

I loved how patient Borscht was with his little Beloved and how he wanted to try and make everything right in his little shifter's world. He has the typical paranormal tendencies in being possessive and protective, which were awesome and I do hope that maybe a few of his brothers find their male mates as well in future books. Maybe Aleksei. Totally awesome read and can't wait for the next one.

An adorable addition to her Series
By Amazon Customer
This was a very cute surprise, Sekani... the bat is absolutely adorable and well written since he literately knew nothing of the world around him, she did a good job exploring his complete sense of innocents though his vampire lover seemed to take advantage of this at some points his wiliness to learn offered him forgiveness... since someone hat to teach him right?... all in all a great book and one of my favorites now. Thank you for writing another one, and I hope to read some more... perhaps one for his rather 'bloody' brother of torture... that should be interesting to see what his deal is.

I saw the movie on TCM, and wanted to read the book. In my judgement, the movie was better, although I do not want to take away the basic story as written by Forbes. I am pleased by Amazon service.

A great story about a Norwegian-American family
By Ellie Iralu
MAMA'S BANK ACCOUNT is a great book about a Norwegian family living in San Francisco. When they have a bill that they need to pay, Mama always says, "We don't want to go to the Big Bank." And everyone will think of something that they can do to help the the bill get payed. Mama loves the city and wants all of her children to be born in San Francisco. When the family moves to the country to live on a farm with goats, no one is happy. Mama becomes pregnant and tells everyone that they have to move back to the city. I thought that MAMA'S BANK ACCOUNT was a nice book about the Great Depression. The stories are sweet and very believeable.

Deserves its classic status
By Nina M. Osier
Mama fell in love with San Francisco as soon as she and her husband arrived in the city from Norway. Five children were born to her there, and she raised them with love and wisdom that daughter Katrin - who Americanized her name to "Kathryn" in early adolescence - would always remember.

I won't call this classic collection of real-life stories charming, because it's got too much solid and at times downright unpleasant reality in its pages. Instead I'll call it inspiring. Money, education, and influence Mama's family didn't have; but everything that really matters they had in plenty. Good food, meticulously clean shelter, solid values, and most of all - of course - love. Recommended for all ages in the highest possible terms!

Baustatik: Grundlagen - Stabtragwerke - Flachentragwerke (German Edition), by Peter Marti
