The content of the inscriptions is very varied, from owner and carpenter attributions on artefacts to memorials to the deceased on erected stones; contrary to popular belief, they are not necessarily magical or mystical, and the post-it notes of today have their forerunners in such runic reminders as: "Buy salt, and don't forget gloves for Sigrid." The typical medieval runic inscription varies from the deeply religious to the highly trivial (or perhaps crucial), such as "I slept with Vigdis when I was in Stavanger." This book presents an accessible account of the Norwegian examples throughout the period of their use. The runic inscriptions are discussed not only from a linguistic point of view but also as sources of information on Norwegian history and culture. In this concise and readable survey, Spurkland addresses more than just the Norwegian runes his title promises. He covers the development of runes in Scandinavia from the Elder Futhark through their heyday in the Viking Age up to their later medieval appearances. His discussion of when, how, and why the runes were reduced from their original number of 24 down to the 16 of the Younger Futhark is especially helpful. He chooses a few key inscriptions to analyze in depth to illustrate historical changes and problems of interpretation. The whole work is informed, clear, and balanced.

The worst Book ever

I have read many books in my long, tedious life, and I must state this is possibly the most boring of them all. I am now a old man, coming up to my 86th birthday. I have read up on many interesting topics on twentieth century history, mostly on wars like the Boer war, WW1 and WW2 which I participated in. I decided several months ago to read up on the UN, well seeing as I am confined to a wheelchair there are not many other activities to do except reading or watching television. By a cruel twist of fate I ended up reading Norrie MacQueen's UN peacekeeping book. The English is abominable and the book does not sustain the reader's interest throughout any of the less than mediocre chapters. Also it doesn't contain enough imformation on the topic it is supposed to be informing on. Even for a primary school student to write a small project.

A remarkable book by a remarkable woman.

I was fortunate enough to work with Ruth for about a year before she passed away. Anyone who has met Ruth knows that her spirit transcended her physical disability. This book is only one example of her courage and perserverence. Please, please read this book. It might change your outlook on people with disabilities.

In Remembrance: Ruth Sienkiewicz-Mercer

Ruth Sienkiewicz-Mercer is, in my estimation, one of the most remarkable women about whom I have ever read. Not only did she survive separation from a loving but misinformed family and the horrors of Belchertown State School, Mrs. Sienkiewicz-Mercer accomplished something seldom achieved by the institutionalized disabled. She not only left the institution, she rose high above it. In this book she uses her eyes to tell her story.
I am saddened to report that Ruth Sienkiewicz-Mercer passed away in the summer of 1998. She never spoke her entire life but she will be sorely missed by those she reached with her words. Many thanks to Steven Kaplan for helping her tell her story.

For anyone who wonders why people who have disabilities fight so desperately against institutional care, this book will show you why! Dehumanization, being cut off from friends and family, rejected by society, this book shows it all. Thank God that this book also describes the way out. Like Joseph, thrown in the pit, sold into slavery, and thought dead for years by his father; we will be free!

When Powers wrote this he was still in apology mode. I certainly don't think he had anything to be sorry about. He got shot out of the sky by a Russian missile and did hard time in a Soviet max joint. Would anyone of us handled it better than he did. Here is the big issue he doesn't really confront. Lee Harvey Oswald knew the exact altitude of the U2 flights and the CIA knew Oswald had defected to Russia in 1959. Yet in 1960 the agency decided to send Powers on a full border to border overflight. The first one ever! Either they knew Oswald was on our side the whole time or ...... they wanted to make sure Powers got shot down. Which was it.

With respect to the "Cold War" we usually know the official versions from both the government of the USA and of the USSR. Powers book is extremely interesting because it gives you a private account of somebody that was deeply involved in the U-2 Cold War incident: a third point of view. A point of view that has no "agenda" to push through.
Powers description of his life in prison had for me an almost spiritual meaning. After reading what he went through, I felt grateful for what I have. He mentions, for example, that in prison work is cherished: he and his cell mate fought to have the privilege of cleaning their cell.
On the other hand, his actual experience in jail was very different from what you see in the movies. There was no violence, no torture, no conspiracy to escape. In almost two years he had a chance to speak with only one other prisoner: his cell mate. It was the most boring experience imaginable, so much so that some prisoners lost their minds.
It is difficult not to feel contempt for Dwight Eisenhower who after ordering the flight completely abandoned Powers to his fate. Eisenhower cared much more for his "prestige" than for any person but in the end his prestige went down the drain anyway when his involvement in the U-2 affair was finally known.
Another player that has dramatically dropped in stature for me is Robert Kennedy. His callousness is hard to believe. After all the suffering Powers went through in the USSR for doing his duty for the CIA, R. Kennedy was willing to try him for treason with the only purpose of advancing his political career! The politics surrounding this event are sickening: JFK had invited Powers to meet him at the White House but at the last moment the offer was withdrawn.
In the end, no president or high level politician did anything to obtain Powers'release from the USSR. It was his father whom he had to thank for his release.
Obviously, the CIA did not want this book to be published and 8 years had to pass before it finally saw the light.
I fully recommend the book as it gives you an insight as to how history is really made by real people, in real places, performing real duties.

Operation Overflight: A Memoir of the U-2 Incident

This book is certainly a must have for the Cold War, Military Aviation and Spy afficionados out there! While the authors did their best to make the most of what little details Powers did/could provide them - especially about the actual missions he flew for the CIA - they failed to do justice to the historical significance of the event. Powers' actual flights and missions in the U-2 are not discussed in great detail (they never even mention the plane's actual altitude, there are no details about the U-2 except for some hearsay info on its imagined structural integrity (or lack thereof), and they assigned less than a page to discuss the other "special missions"), and there are very few details about the mission the book was actually written about. What you will nevertheless be able to read in detail about are his time spent in Russian prisons, the KGB interrogations, or his kind Latvian roomate Zigurd in Vladimir prison. The final section of the book is spent on the well-justified trashing of the CIA (afterall they gave him the shaft the same way NASA did to the Apollo 13 crew), and Powers provides some great insights into the personal dealings of the Agency. Reading it today, Powers' observations were way ahead of their time! You'll appreciate Powers Jr's epilogue that puts the entire book in perspective. Overall it is a great book, the only first-hand account of the U-2 incident you'll ever have, and as a matter of fact, I'll go and read it again!

Kathleen McWhorter (Ph.D. SUNY, Buffalo) is Professor of Humanities and Coordinator of Learning Skills at Niagara County Community College. In addition to her developmental writing series from Houghton Mifflin, McWhorter is the author of several successful reading and study skills texts from Longman including College Reading and Study Skills, Efficient and Flexible Reading, Academic Reading, and Guide to College Reading. I like the integrated reading/writing format

I have used this book for a few semesters now. I like the integrated reading/writing format. I find the stories to be engaging, but they are in many cases too difficult for the level of students this book is intended for. The book is also too much to get through in one semester, so I would like to see a condensed version of it for a cheaper price in the future. Overall, I think it's a good textbook.
