Great questions that lead to very deep conversations

Although I'm already very happily married, my wife and I have found this book to be incredibly stimulating. She bought a copy on impulse for a friend who's getting married, but after skimming through it, we ended up keeping a copy for ourselves and buying another for our friend. We haven't finished it yet (not by a long shot), but we have found the process of answering the questions very insightful and provocative. We have discovered things about each other that might have taken years to find out. We have had some incredibly deep and interesting (and sometimes quite difficult) conversations that have lead us to whole new levels of understanding about each other. I'm generally not a big "self help" guy, and I was definitely skeptical when she started reading the questions to me, but it really has been a fun and helpful (albeit also a little scary sometimes) process. I recommend this book highly and not just for people who are contemplating getting married. I think it's an excellent book for any two people who are involved in a committed relationship and who want to understand each other better and perhaps take their relationship to a deeper, more meaningful level.

Great tool for couples!

I have seen some great success with this book in my personal relationship and highly reccomend it to others! I am currently in a long distance relationship in which my partner live 730 miles away. We had come to the point in our relationship where we had been discussing marriage and the possibility of me moving to be with him and his son. Uprooting my life has been a difficult pill to swallow and I wanted to make sure I was making the right choice before making such a move. I purchased this book so we might cover those make or break relationship moments before actually making the move and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. My partner was not only more than willing to participate, but excited as well! I was thrilled at his enthusiasm as well as at his answers! We were able to have some riveting conversations on those tough relationship questions and I currently making moves to relocate!

best for every couple

I disagree with previous writers who say the questions are childish, or for people with a short engagement. We had a long engagement, and found this book to be quite stimulating. I will agree that some of the questions you hopefully have talked about before becoming engaged, but others we hadn't thought of.
Also, the book is supposed to spur discussion, contemplation, and conversation, and the questions are not supposed to elicit just at one sentence answer. Developing good communication is a must for any marriage, and this book is great at sparking discussion and debate. It is nice that it has questions like "What do you think a father is supposed to do?" as the answer to these can vary greatly from person to person. If you discuss these types of questions before even getting married, you will be able to have realistic expectations of your future spouse, knowing better his/her beliefs and expectations of you too. The point of this book is to find out if there are huge discrepancies in your backgrounds, morals and values, so that you can work through them before they become an issue, and destroy your relationship.

The thing I liked best about this book, is that while reading it, in answering a question, we would often get into conversation about things that were related, but not necessarily asked in the book.

I think this book is great for married couples, as well as engaged couples.

An Excellent ESL Tool!

I teach a intermediate/advanced reading and writing class in an adult English as a Second Language program in Arlington, Virginia, and this book is by far my favorite resource. My students are always asking for dictations, and this book provides stimulating twists on the standard dictation. Each activity is rated as to the difficulty and adaptability level, and most activities are adaptable to different levels. The book provides activities for groups and pair work, which is so important in the adult ESL classroom. The activities really get the students excited, and many get them up and moving around. A favorite is an activity called "Messenger and Scribe" in which one student reads from a prepared text taped to the wall in the hallway, remembers what he or she has read, and returns to the classroom to dictate to the "Scribe" in the pair what the text says. This provides excellent opportunities for self-correction, and different prepared texts can be used for different level students in a multi-level classroom. I highly recommend this book to any teacher who is looking for a new way to present an old favorite. If reading and writing is even a small part of the class that you teach, this book should be on your shelf.

These poems, appearing in Spanish and Engish translation rendered by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Merwin, convey the Argentine Juarroz's ideas about the continuity and infinity of human experience: once external factors are stripped away from one's life, what remains is abstract and primitive. The physicality of a poem is integral to the meaning of its words: Juarroz devises his creations vertically, geometrically; they can begin at the first word or the last, the constant being motion, fundamental and never-changing. A lilting symmetry of sound results, but because the crux of this work is Juarroz's conviction of the immutability and significance of form as meaning, the volume becomes one long poem, a cycle of form repeating itself. Metaphysical designs, however gracefully sculpted into verse, do not allow here for much variety in language or music in individual words; while the poems often have a mesmerizing, heady quality, just as often they are indistinguishable, repetitive and inaccessible. If the collection were shorter, perhaps the esoteric quality of the poems would be provocative, rather than overwhelming. Juarroz's aphorisms are illuminating and original, but the plethora of them diminishes their power.

"Vertical poetry" describes not so much the form of these poems as their "shrugging-off of the traditional arrogation and restrictions of Post-Aristotelian Western logic," according to award-winning poet/translator Merwin. Selecting from nine collections spanning nearly 30 years of Juarroz's work, Merwin compares Juarroz's aphoristic, fragmentary, free verse poems (all numbered, rather than titled) to the work of Blake, Rilke, and the author of the Tao Te Ching . Machado comes to mind, too. These short, highly compressed poems gradually draw the reader to their centers and complexities, often requiring repeated readings before meanings are felt. Another Argentine Poet Obsessed with Metaphysics

When Juarroz successfully executes his highly distinctive "vertical poetry," his mind pierces to the core of both metaphysical and ontological questions with greater conciseness than Borges. Better still, Juarroz achieves lucid insights into questions of memory, reality and selfhood without inevitably resorting to tired revisitings of Heraclitus, Shakespeare, etc. (as Borges so often did). But when Juarroz's aphoristically styled poems fail, they read like fortune cookie messages written by someone intent upon exhausting the reader into incomprehension; worse, his minimalist style offers few descriptive attractions or linguistic diversions when his ideas lack substance. This is often the case in his earlier works, where he insisted to belabor the question of God in a way that wavered between belief and disbelief, flirting with a kind of lulled and lulling agnosticism. As the eighth piece in his first collection states, "But nevermind./I've stopped praying./I'm going looking for the back of god."

Thankfully, Juarroz eventually returned from this trifling quasi-theological journey to end up in intellectually and imaginatively richer territory. The very first selection from his second collection, Second Vertical Poetry, evokes a moment in which the poet's augmented awareness restores him to the strangeness of being self-conscious in a world largely predominated by objects: "Ancient cries/still floating between things, like algae of sound,/catch in the aerial shores of my thought./Then the centuries dissolve like crystals of oblivion/and I am again the first man...". Here, Juarroz weighs his subjectivity against the imposing hand of Nature and finds himself recontextualized as an isolated though truly singular exception to the great non-human majority of the world's things.

Yes, Juarroz consistently wavers between inadequate expressions which result in obfuscation and truly lucid revelations, but, fortunately, the latter successes more than justify wading through the lesser entries of this book. Juarroz is most interesting when finding the perfection of the hypothetical to negatively reveal the imperfection of the actual, as in the final stanza from one of the finest poems in this collection: "If a man could transplant his memories,/death would not exist/and neither dreams nor madness/would be necessary./Not even love would be necessary."

And when Juarroz's work reaches its own perfection in a gesture of effacement--a self-negating voice speaking between the lines of the poem--"We must leave our images in mid-air/to get closer to our transfigurations/and converse with them at the edge of the whiteness/with no letter for witness."

Unlike so many poets whose narcissism inundates the reader with so much verbal excess, Juarroz's crystalline brevity affords the reader much space for thinking after the book is closed. For this virtue, his poems must be cherished.

AWESOME BOOKS!!!!

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! I read the Daughters of Darkness bundle with the 4 sisters wrote by 4 different authors & decided 2 start reading the rest in these series....glad I did. Blair was great in her small adventure. What a good idea behind giving 4 different authors the oppurtunity to write their story behind each sister. I really liked that idea. So I'm on to the next sister's story. Cant wait. GREAT READ!!!!

This was pretty good I'm kinda out of books to read and I've never read any of the free books on Amazon so I am pleasantly surprise. My only critique would be I wish there would have been a little more character development so I could really feel for the characters. The book was over far to soon!

I hate it that you didn't write a following book and end Blairs story. I hate cliff hanger, don't just end the book that's way. End her story, does she meet her other sisters, does Victoria know who the other sisters are? Like I have more quotations I would like to see how it ends for Blair. And if you do decide please, don't kill her or Danny!!

About the Author
S. Christian Albright received his B.S. degree in mathematics from Stanford in 1968 and his Ph.D. in operations research from Stanford in 1972. Since then, he has been teaching in the Operations and Decision Technologies Department in the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. He has taught courses in management science, computer simulation, and statistics to all levels of business students: undergraduates, MBAs, and doctoral students. His current interest is in spreadsheet modeling, including development of VBA applications in Excel. Dr. Albright has published more than 20 articles in leading operations research journals in the area of applied probability. He has also published a number of successful textbooks, including DATA ANALYSIS AND DECISION MAKING, DATA ANALYSIS FOR MANAGERS, and SPREADSHEET MODELING AND APPLICATIONS.

Wayne L. Winston is Professor of Operations and Decision Technologies in the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, where he has taught since 1975. Wayne received his B.S. degree in Mathematics from MIT and his Ph.D. degree in Operations Research from Yale. He has written the successful textbooks OPERATIONS RESEARCH: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, MATHEMATICAL PROGRAMMING: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, SIMULATION MODELING WITH @RISK, PRATICAL MANAGEMENT SCIENCE, DATA ANALYSIS FOR MANAGERS, SPREADSHEET MODELING AND APPLICATIONS, AND FINANCIAL MODELS USING SIMULATION AND OPTIMIZATION. Wayne has published over 20 articles in leading journals and has won many teaching awards, including the school-wide MBA award four times. His current interest is in showing how spreadsheet models can be used to solve business problems in all disciplines, particularly in finance and marketing.

Christopher J. Zappe earned his B.A. in Mathematics from DePauw University in 1983 and his M.B.A. and Ph.D. in Decision Sciences from Indiana University in 1987 and 1988, respectively. Since 1993, Professor Zappe has been serving as an associate professor in the decision sciences area of the Department of Management at Bucknell University (Lewisburg, PA). He has published articles in scholarly journals such as Managerial and Decision Economics, OMEGA, Naval Research Logistics, and Interfaces.

BEWARE: Kindle version does NOT come with the code to access excel files!!!!!

I thought I was saving money with the Kindle version of this book, but unfortunately found out that I have to purchase the CD-ROM access code separately. I wish Amazon made this more blatantly clear to me.

Textbook? or Software Manual

Between my Undergrad, Continuing Education, and the first 3rd of my Masters, I have read a lot of textbooks. This is the worst textbook I have ever had the misfortune to use. It is impossible to sit down and read a chapter, because all of the examples are in the online content. Part of the online content is a download of the authors' software. The book is written as a manual for their software. The software is very tempermental, and it takes forever to complete an analysis for the problems, because you can only run one function at a time, and have to save and exit, and re-open to go on to the next function, or it just won't work, or will shut itself down. A page full of problems does not indicate the end of the chapter like traditional textbooks, there are pages of problems throughout the chapters. This book is just frustrating! Unless you plan on convincing your company to purchase their software, as they suggest in Chapter 1, this book is NOT a good reference for anyone trying to learn Quantitative Analysis.

BUYER BEWARE - No Online Content Card

The book title is completely misleading. There is an online content access card included, but the code has already been used and you will not have online access!

The book is pretty worthless without the online content or the purchase of stat tools. If you are purchasing this book for a class make sure that you do not need the online content. If you are purchasing this book for personal use be aware that it will be a difficult read and much of the book will not be useful without the online content or stat tools.

Ali N. Akansu, Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), USA
Dr. Akansu is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at NJIT, USA. Prof. Akansu was VP R&D at IDT Corporation and the founding President and CEO of PixWave, Inc. He has sat on the board of an investment fund and has been an academic visitor at David Sarnoff Research Center, IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, and GEC-Marconi Electronic Systems.Prof. Akansu was a Visiting Professor at Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University performing research on Quantitative Finance. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and was the Lead Guest Editor of the recent special issue of IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Signal Processing on Signal Processing Methods in Finance and Electronic Trading.

Sanjeev R. Kulkarni, Department of Electrical Engineering, Princeton University, USA
Dr. Kulkarni is currently Professor of Electrical Engineering at Princeton University, and Director of Princeton’s Keller Center. He is an affiliated faculty member of the Department of Operations Research and Financial Engineering and the Department of Philosophy, and has taught a broad range of courses across a number of departments (Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Philosophy, and Operations Research & Financial Engineering). He has received 7 E-Council Excellence in Teaching Awards. He spent 1998 with Susquehanna International Group and was a regular consultant there from 1997 to 2001, working on statistical arbitrage and analysis of firm-wide stock trading. Prof. Kulkarni is a Fellow of the IEEE.

Dmitry Malioutev, IBM Research, USA
Dr. Dmitry Malioutov is a research staff member in the machine learning group of the Cognitive Algorithms department at IBM Research. Dmitry received the Ph.D. and the S.M. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT where he was part of the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems. Prior to joining IBM, Dmitry had spent several years as an applied researcher in high-frequency trading in DRW Trading, Chicago, and as a postdoctoral researcher in Microsoft Research, Cambridge, UK. His research interests include interpretable machine learning; sparse signal representation; inference and learning in graphical models, message passing algorithms; Statistical risk modeling, robust covariance estimation; portfolio optimization. Dr. Malioutov received the 2010 IEEE Signal Processing Society best 5-year paper award, and a 2006 IEEE ICASSP student paper award, and the MIT Presidential fellowship. Dr. Malioutov serves on the IEEE-SPS machine learning for signal processing technical committee, and is an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, and a guest editor of the IEEE Journal on Selected Topics in Signal Processing.

some interesting chapters

I really enjoyed the chapter on sparse markowitz portfolios, on statistical measures of dependence, and connections between cVaR risk and support vector machines. Some chapters are well written and others are harder to read -- but most of the topics are interesting and go beyond the standard material in quant books. Note that the book is a collection of contributed chapters, not a textbook.
