About the Author

Omar Santos is the technical leader for the Cisco Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT). He mentors and leads engineers and incident managers during the investigation and resolution of security vulnerabilities in all Cisco products. Omar has been working with information technology and cybersecurity since the mid-1990s. Omar has designed, implemented, and supported numerous secure networks for Fortune 100 and 500 companies and for the U.S. government. Prior to his current role, he was a technical leader within the World Wide Security Practice and the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC), where he taught, led, and mentored many engineers within both organizations.

Omar is an active member of the security community, where he leads several industrywide initiatives and standards bodies. His active role helps businesses, academic institutions, state and local law enforcement agencies, and other participants that are dedicated to increasing the security of the critical infrastructure.

Omar is the author of several books and numerous white papers, articles, and security configuration guidelines and best practices. Omar has also delivered numerous technical presentations at many conferences and to Cisco customers and partners, in addition to many C-level executive presentations to many organizations.

John Stuppi, CCIE No. 11154 (Security), is a technical leader in the Cisco Security Solutions (CSS) organization at Cisco, where he consults Cisco customers on protecting their network against existing and emerging cybersecurity threats. In this role, John is responsible for providing effective techniques using Cisco product capabilities to provide identification and mitigation solutions for Cisco customers who are concerned with current or expected security threats to their network environments. Current projects include helping customers leverage DNS and NetFlow data to identify and subsequently mitigate network-based threats. John has presented multiple times on various network security topics at Cisco Live, Black Hat, and other customer-facing cybersecurity conferences. In addition, John contributes to the Cisco Security Portal through the publication of white papers, security blog posts, and cyber risk report articles. Before joining Cisco, John worked as a network engineer for JPMorgan and then as a network security engineer at Time, Inc., with both positions based in New York City. John is also a CISSP (#25525) and holds an Information Systems Security (INFOSEC) professional certification. In addition, John has a BSEE from Lehigh University and an MBA from Rutgers University. John lives in Ocean Township, New Jersey (a.k.a. the “Jersey Shore”) with his wife, two kids, and dog.

Nothing Special, but it's your only choice.

A lot of material was borrowed from the previous Official Cert Guide for the CCNA Security. You can see evidence of this if you look on page 434 - the hostname of the ASA is Keith-IINS-ASA - Keith Barker didn't write this one, but he did write the last one. Not only that but the ASA section is more about the 5505 than anything. Forget that the NGFW was released more than 2 years ago. There are pieces missing from the curriculum as well - one example is PVLAN. There are inconsistencies with the curriculum as stated on the Cisco website and the content of this book, especially CCP still being heavily rammed in your ass when there is not one word about it existing on the 210-260. I'm really disappointed in this book, and being a lover of all things Cisco, I'm really disappointed they would release such garbage. Unfortunately, this is the only real book that exists for this exam, and it's a requirement for the CCNP Security (that is a whole other story as well). I recommend purchasing the lab guide for CCNA Security Version 2, that way you can cover your bases here. Do not use this book alone, or you will fail.

Aside from the fact the book is a let-down for being a real guide for the certification, the content is ok. It reads just like an OCG usually does.

Very well-written and relevant to today's network security work

I am thrilled to see this new exam and the Official Cert Guide that goes with it. After reading just the first few chapters, it's clear the authors intention is not only to cover the exam materials by rote, but to explain things in very clear, easy to grasp language. They succeed at this nicely, much more so than with most certification study guides. They explain the "why" and the "how" of the technologies they cover and do a good job of relating concepts to real-world scenarios. It seems they probably have a teaching background and seek to ensure students clearly understand the concepts.

My only real critique, and it's a minor one (not enough to dock it a star), is that some of the diagrams (especially the more complex diagrams) aren't always clear and simple. They've probably done the best they can with complex topologies, but it still takes some close examination to make sure you understand what role each piece of the diagram is playing.

One note about the exam objectives: The new 210-160 exam is a much needed improvement over the previous exam. The focus here is obviously more current, but also much more relevant to the real work of network security professionals. My biggest complaint about the previous CCNA Security (640-554) exam objectives was its overemphasis on theory and detachment from real-world network security work. It put an inordinate focus on Cisco Configuration Professional (CCP), which is widely disregarded by most network engineers. The new exam focuses much more on the ASA, which is probably Cisco most widely deployed, widely used security product. It also puts a large emphasis on SSL VPNs (AnyConnect), cloud-integrated services, and BYOD, which is what anyone working in network security today is dealing with. As a network engineer who is also responsible for network security, I'm finding the material in this OCG very familiar, which is a good sign that CCNA Security (210-260) is a much more credible exam now.

ON EDIT: After going through this book thoroughly for over a month now, I have to deduct at least one star. I happened to notice some content seemed to be missing, as if it were supposed to be there, it was planned for it to be there, but it somehow didn't make it into the book. For instance, on page 31 under the heading "Data Loss and Exfiltration Methods", it lists three types of data susceptible to loss, and then no mention at all of exfiltration methods.

After downloading the errata, it seems to confirm missing content in other areas. One sentence in chapter 17 refers to the next chapter being about IOS IPS. That chapter on IOS IPS does not exist and errata indicates this sentence referring to it should be removed. In another place, the author refer to previously showing how to verify IOS image integrity using hashing, but the errata says this should be omitted, because that's not actually in the book. It's clear that it was intended to be covered, but wasn't.

It seems like this book was rushed into print and carelessly left out some important content. I still give it four stars for the content that's there and the author's clear, easy to follow explanations. But I'm disappointed that this is the "Official" certification guide and has left out critical content.

Not good enough for a "cert guide".

I just took the test and this book does not nearly cover what they are testing on. I've taken 12 cert exams and this one has by far the least correlation between the Official cert guide and the actual exam topics. Roughly 25-50% of the real exam questions were on things either not covered in this book, scarcely mentioned, or from entirely different Cisco exams(CCNA or older CCNA material, again not mentioned in the CCNA Security books). For example to name a few topics I remember, questions on EAP, Private VLANs, OSPF(not related to security), SourceFIRE, and details of Mobile Device Management that were not covered in the book.. I studied very hard based on the material in this book, as I usually do for exams, and scored greatly on the included practice exams, but again, they were SIGNIFICANTLY different from what a large number of real exam questions were about.

Basically, good luck, this book isn't enough. I would suggest this book as a starting point, but master every fine detail, and anywhere they scarcely mention a technology, even a single sentence, you'll want to read a configuration guide on that. As for how the book is written, it has a lot of "fluff" in it, basically worthless statements/sentences that do absolutely nothing for your learning, which makes for a lot of wasted time reading or wasted paper to print the book.
Junipers FREE study guides are significantly better than this garbage, they're to the point, and they actually correlate to what the exam tests on. Cisco's exams seem to be going downhill and fading away from they're purpose, to prepare us for working in the real world, with technologies that real companies use. This book honestly covers some technologies that I work with in real life and helped me learn and improve in my job a bit. But as for a guide to prepare you for the Cisco La-La-Land exam, it's not enough.

About the Author
Terryl Whitlatch is an accomplished, scientifically and academically trained illustrator who extensively studied vertebrate zoology and animal anatomy. She has worked for various zoos and museums in the United States and as senior consultant on Wildlife Art and Animal Anatomy for the World Wildlife Fund. She is considered to be one of the top creature designers and animal anatomists working in the field today. In a career spanning more than 25 years, Whitlatch has many projects to her credit, including Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Star Wars: The Special Edition, Jumanji, Men in Black, Brother Bear, Dragonheart, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Curious George, The Polar Express, and Beowulf. For over seven years, she worked for Lucasfilm, Industrial Light & Magic, and George Lucas’s JAK Films. Her illustration skills and comprehensive knowledge of animal anatomy and movement are essential in the development of believable creature creation.

Not much of a guild, but a good looking artbook.

Shipping -- Great. Amazon said it will show up in two days and it did.

As a teaching book -- Not so much. There are pictures and some anatomy terms labeling parts of the body but I can get that from my animal anatomy and ornithology book. There's a brief for each chapter at the beginning discussing the "Principle".

Example pictures -- Think of it like the artist comments in Deviantart or other art-posting site. There is a bit telling you the description on most full page images.

As an artbook -- Good. Not so much teaching, a lot of reused art. If you have the Creatures real and imagine book, then you might want to skip this in terms of an artbook collection. The pictures are printed in high quality.

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC - intense, addictive & emotional

Thank you Judy from Random House Australia for inviting me to read this fabulous debut. Claire Kells has created one amazing New Adult romance. Her characters are complex and the topic is no easy subject to write about or read for that matter, PTSD is a taboo subject really, but the realism Ms Kells inflicts in her book places you right in the heart of Avery. The details of the plane crash were meticulous and with so many happening in real life these days, it brings to the forefront the topic of locator beacons. I really loved the scene when the plane was falling between Colin and Avery, it was very sweet and inspiring. Colin is such a beautiful guy that is totally misunderstood, but he is my hero.

Avery Delacorte is a nineteen year old swimmer. She’s been in the pool since the age of three and is the youngest of four children. Her three older brothers are in the spotlight themselves, two being baseball superstars and one in Hollywood. Avery had moved across the country to be part of the best college swim team and to escape expectations from her family.

Avery became a different person when she moved, popular and social and a much loved boyfriend that’s also on the swim team, Lee. Her first week as a freshman and the first person she notices in the pool is Colin Shea. His butterfly was powerful and he stands out against all the others in the pool. He was clearly born to be a swimmer and is being called the next Michael Phelps.

Now a sophomore and Avery is heading home for the holidays. Colin and Phil Markey (also on the team) are on the same flight. Colin is a massive muscular guy and ends up sitting next to Avery, though she isn’t happy about it; she has been avoiding him since she started college. Anyway, Avery dozes off, it’s a six hour flight after all, but is suddenly awoken with screams and panic.

Colin is calm and confident, he takes Avery’s hand and tells her “we’re going to make it, Avery” they weren’t going to die. How does he stay so calm is such chaos? As they fall from the sky, Colin and Avery look at each and then “don’t be afraid” BANG CRASH!

Will they be rescued? How will they survive in a wilderness that’s covered in snow? Will they give in to their true feelings? What will happen if they return?

The intense scenes in the wilderness, the survival skills that Avery learnt from her father and the love she discovers are all incredible in itself. But with the addition of the other elements about her brother’s, her family life and Colin revealing his, adds to one marvellous debut. Ms Kells is now certainly a favourite of mine and I cannot wait to read what she creates next.

A thoroughly engrossing book

We all know the statistics about air travel. How it’s so much safer than driving a car. How the number of people dying in plane crashes grows smaller every year, while the number of people who survive them grows larger. How, despite recent news, plane travel continues to get safer and safer every year. Yet who among us does not squeeze the arm rest just a little tighter during take-off and landing? Driving a car at least provides an illusion of being in control. There’s no such illusion strapped into a plane seat.

For Avery Delacorte, the protagonist of Claire Kells’ Girl Underwater, the airplane that takes her and her college swim teammates, Phil and Colin, from their California school to their hometowns near Boston, only represents the six hours in between her and reuniting with her family for Thanksgiving. Sophomore Avery finds Colin, a powerful senior, particularly intimidating, and is dismayed when he plops down on the seat next to her. But when the flight goes down somewhere in the Rocky Mountains, she’s glad that calm, strong Colin was her seatmate. Avery and Colin help three small boys out of the plane; Colin carries an unconscious pregnant woman on his shoulder. They’re the only survivors, and they watch the plane sink into an enormous, cold lake. Luggage floats nearby, but the lake is cold and the swimmers are hurt. They’re in the middle of nowhere and winter is coming. How will they survive?

While structured differently, Girl Underwater reminded me a lot of Tracey Garvis-Graves’ novel On the Island, as both books made me think about how long I’d survive in such conditions. Maybe about eight hours. I don’t know how to make a fire from two sticks, or stitch a wound together, or which mushrooms are safe to eat. Books like these are not only entertaining, they’re survival guides.

But structure is key in differentiating these two books. While On the Island (soon to be a major motion picture!) was told in a linear fashion that kept readers wondering if there would ever be an "Off the Island," Girl Underwater alternates between the plane crash and its immediate aftermath with Avery’s story a month later, as she tries to physical and mentally recover. The boys are hospitalized but okay, while Colin is still in critical condition and being transferred to a hospital closer to his home.

As this structure reveals itself within the first few chapters, I’m not giving anything away by describing it. I did, however, wonder why author Kells chose to tell the story this way. As it’s told from Avery’s first person point of view, it seems obvious that all five crash survivors go on to survive their five-day stranding. The mystery then boils down to simpler questions about why Avery doesn’t want to see the boys or Colin again. What exactly happened while they were stranded? Why does she feel so guilty? What is she hiding?

Girl Underwater is a thoroughly engrossing book. The scenes with the five stranded in the snowy Rocky mountains are so well-written, I was completely transported to the setting. However, the scenes of Avery coping after her rescue are sometimes confusing when they should have been mysterious. There are plot holes and inconsistencies that made me wish that such a wonderful book had had a better editor. And while I had no trouble believing that Avery’s surgeon father would have taught her basic – even advanced – life-saving medical techniques, it was too much that he’d taught her advanced survival skills as well. As the Church Lady on Saturday Night Live used to say, "how convenient." Still, these problems only slightly diminished my enjoyment of the book. Despite these flaws, it’s “unputdownable.”

Many readers take up the hobby to be transported to happier, more romantic places – Elizabethan England, high school romance. Then there are those of us who read to go to those bad places – haunted houses, war, desert islands, plane crash aftermath. These books show that not only can man triumph over nature’s worse impulses, we can also triumph over our own.

Read this book, unless you don't like to have fun.

This book is a fun read, and Claire Kells has a remarkable knack for weaving a story of adventure, survival, love, and anguish.

This book will obviously be compared to the Twilight and Hunger Games series. They all feature a female lead character caught between two romantic interests, struggling with both internal and external conflicts and threats to their survival. They're also fun stories that make great reads. Girl Underwater breaks from the other two in some important ways.

First, it's realistic. There's no sci-fi creatures or illogical dystopian future. The scenario could actually happen. This puts a good amount more weight on the author's shoulders to keep things credible, and Kells delivers. She doesn't invent a new order of beings or silly technology to get out of a plot hole. Secondly, the heroine isn't just a confused teenager but a competitive athlete and interesting girl. She's someone young people can look up to and older people can hope to see in their kids. She has her flaws but she also has a multitude of strengths that make you appreciate the depth of her character.

Hollywood execs: buy the rights now. This book would make a great film. Readers: Snatch this book up and have fun with it. Then anxiously wait for the followup. There could be a sequel, but I'd much rather see what else Ms. Kells can imagine. I can imagine that this could be a sleeper hit that everyone comes back to read after the second or third book smashes records. So get in on the ground floor of this remarkable author's storytelling. People who don't like to have fun: you need not apply.

Son's math score went up EIGHT points

My son originally scored a 16 in Math on his first ACT. We tried two other ACT prep books before this one. They were long and tedious and mainly just reviewed math skills. This book went well beyond the skills needed and explained how to attack a variety of problems that are common on the ACT. Each of the 50 skills are broken down into a one page explaination and an additional page of five practice problems. There are study cards for each skill so you can review the skill daily to help remember it. Sam was able to cover two to five skills daily without feeling overwhelmed or defeated. His score increased to a 24. In each of the subscore areas, he increase by 4 points for an overall increase of eight points. I strongly recommend this book. It was completedly different than other books we tried and apparently it's fairly effective. He might have done better had he finished the last ten skills. He only finished the first 40 skills in the book.

Quick review of what's on the ACT Math.

If you just want a quick review book than this is the book for you. This book is short,concise, with all topics reviewed. All answers are clearly explained. The first review gave a very accurate description of how the book was organized, so I will not repeat. The book itself is well organized.
However, if are looking a more intensive math practice,a better book would be McGraw-Hill's CONQUERING THE ACT MATH.

The Best Prep For The Math Portion Of The ACT

I have not been in school since 2006 and I just took my ACT last weekend. After signing up for the ACT, I spent hours online trying to pick out the book that would help me prepare. I am very strong with English and Reading, but a little more than rusty on my Math skills. I decided to purchase a book that would mainly focus on the Math section. This book was my decision. The only book I purchased for ACT prep. At first I was unsure if I had made the right choice in the one book that would help me get ready for this big test. When I sat down and started taking the pretest, I realized I was in deeper than I thought. But when the lessons started--I mean the "skills", I started to understand the equations and it made the Math seem a lot simpler. Each lesson has 5 questions; ranging from easy to hard, that help you review each skill. After you are through with all the skills, there is a review and a posttest. There is also a CD-ROM attached that has 2 additional practice test. I completed the book and both practice tests. The night before the test, I didn't need to cram. The Math test was second, after English. I was so confident with my Math and with the help of a good calculator (TI-30XIIS), I even had time to go back and check my work! This book really helped me prepare for everything that was included on the test. I was so happy with the results and how much I learned!

Finally, he tests his ideas through a number of important events in international relations from nineteenth- and twentieth-century European history.

In a contemporary application of Jervis's ideas, some argue that Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in 1990 in part because he misread the signals of American leaders with regard to the independence of Kuwait. Also, leaders of the United States and Iraq in the run-up to the most recent Gulf War might have been operating under cognitive biases that made them value certain kinds of information more than others, whether or not the information was true. Jervis proved that, once a leader believed something, that perception would influence the way the leader perceived all other relevant information.

amazing overuse of passive voice

To be concise (which Jervis seems to be incapable of) I'll say that if you can get through the extraneous prose, amazing overuse of passive voice, and massive run on sentences it's a great book. It was like reading a Medieval scroll of truly revolutionary International Relations concepts.

Wealth of information

I am an academic and have used previous editions of Mallis as preparation for writing and presentations and legal documents. The new (10th) edition is up to date and provides me with state of the art information for updating my teaching and writing projects. For my next expert witness case, I'm sure that I will rely on Mallis 10 as a starting point to draft documents or prepare for deposition and/or court room testimony.
