Poorly written and poorly edited.

I bought this book as a required textbook for the advanced pathophysiology class I am in. I am not happy with the book. Throughout the text (I have both the hardcover, that I bought from Amazon and the electronic version I bought from Google Play Books) there are numerous typographic errors. The book uses very stilted and dated language. There are many sections where the authors will begin discussing a topic, move on to another topic or aspect of the topic, and then never finish the original thought. The authors will list three or four things that are pertinent to understanding a topic and then discuss them in a different order than originally presented. They will talk about one thing being most important and talk about that thing last. I have never been so frustrated by reading a textbook as I was with this one. Before you apply to a nurse practitioner program, I would inquire about what text they use for patho. If it is this one, I would look for another program. It is that bad.

Good text, not fantastic, but GOOD...

Required text for class, so I don't know if I would purchase this if I were simply shopping for a text to update my library. Things I liked: color coded by systems; text broken down with the first system chapters focused on the physiology of a healthy system; subsequent chapters focused on pathophysiology according to gender (if warranted) and pediatrics; geriatric patients are singled out and covered in the system and adult chapters with normal age related changes or abnormal age related changes noted and discussed; pathological conditions are presented by introduction (description & incidence), pathophysiology, patient presentation and mention of therapy options; and finally, there are lots of fantastic illustrations and tables (I'm a visual learner).
What I didn't like so much: with a publication date of 2014, I would have expected it to be more up to date on hotly researched areas of study than it was (a very few topics were woefully outdated by many years, not months). While I recognize our understanding of disease processes are changing daily, mearly mentioning that a topic is evolving rapidly (epigenetics, for instance) would have gone far in making this text better able to stand up to time, almost helping to excuse any outdated material, if that makes sense. At the very least, it would have served well to provide cues that a current literature search may be warranted. Elsevier's Evolve was a little disappointing, too... Chapter reviews were exactly those found at the end of the chapters in the book, no more, no less and often lacked pertinent material needed for study; only the chapter "high points", I guess you could say. These reviews were downloadable in a Word document, though, so personal alterations to add content as needed for study was a simple enough matter. That's a plus. Occasionally, there were some good graphics to aid in understanding, but not every Evolve chapter offered them. Honestly, I got more from watching YouTube for clarification on some topics (reputable sources, such as universities and disease foundations, of course). Evolve, does offer practice quizzes, but they were painfully short and didn't cover all the material one should expect from an instructor's quizzes or tests (again, only the high points). All in all, though, it's a decent text given the content; and the layout was perfect for my style of learning and study habits. I'll be hanging on to this one for future reference.

Not a "straight to the point" kind of textbook...

I absolutely agree with most of the other "hate it/don't like it" reviews. I am a Denver university student and this textbook was, of course, utilized for our Pathophysiology class. It was awful. It poorly explained each topic. It bounced around in each section as opposed to sticking with what it was talking about and then flowing into its next topic. I do not know if it is because I am a "straight to the point" kind of person, but this textbook did not do that. I would HIGHLY suggest the study guide and reviewing the summaries at the end of each chapter if this pertains to any Colorado college students as of 2016. It really helped me acheive an "A" in the class in addition to other internet resources. The textbook just really sucked (at least for me).
