Poorly written and poorly edited.

I bought this book as a required textbook for the advanced pathophysiology class I am in. I am not happy with the book. Throughout the text (I have both the hardcover, that I bought from Amazon and the electronic version I bought from Google Play Books) there are numerous typographic errors. The book uses very stilted and dated language. There are many sections where the authors will begin discussing a topic, move on to another topic or aspect of the topic, and then never finish the original thought. The authors will list three or four things that are pertinent to understanding a topic and then discuss them in a different order than originally presented. They will talk about one thing being most important and talk about that thing last. I have never been so frustrated by reading a textbook as I was with this one. Before you apply to a nurse practitioner program, I would inquire about what text they use for patho. If it is this one, I would look for another program. It is that bad.

Good text, not fantastic, but GOOD...

Required text for class, so I don't know if I would purchase this if I were simply shopping for a text to update my library. Things I liked: color coded by systems; text broken down with the first system chapters focused on the physiology of a healthy system; subsequent chapters focused on pathophysiology according to gender (if warranted) and pediatrics; geriatric patients are singled out and covered in the system and adult chapters with normal age related changes or abnormal age related changes noted and discussed; pathological conditions are presented by introduction (description & incidence), pathophysiology, patient presentation and mention of therapy options; and finally, there are lots of fantastic illustrations and tables (I'm a visual learner).

What I didn't like so much: with a publication date of 2014, I would have expected it to be more up to date on hotly researched areas of study than it was (a very few topics were woefully outdated by many years, not months). While I recognize our understanding of disease processes are changing daily, mearly mentioning that a topic is evolving rapidly (epigenetics, for instance) would have gone far in making this text better able to stand up to time, almost helping to excuse any outdated material, if that makes sense. At the very least, it would have served well to provide cues that a current literature search may be warranted. Elsevier's Evolve was a little disappointing, too... Chapter reviews were exactly those found at the end of the chapters in the book, no more, no less and often lacked pertinent material needed for study; only the chapter "high points", I guess you could say. These reviews were downloadable in a Word document, though, so personal alterations to add content as needed for study was a simple enough matter. That's a plus. Occasionally, there were some good graphics to aid in understanding, but not every Evolve chapter offered them. Honestly, I got more from watching YouTube for clarification on some topics (reputable sources, such as universities and disease foundations, of course). Evolve, does offer practice quizzes, but they were painfully short and didn't cover all the material one should expect from an instructor's quizzes or tests (again, only the high points). All in all, though, it's a decent text given the content; and the layout was perfect for my style of learning and study habits. I'll be hanging on to this one for future reference.

Not a "straight to the point" kind of textbook...

I absolutely agree with most of the other "hate it/don't like it" reviews. I am a Denver university student and this textbook was, of course, utilized for our Pathophysiology class. It was awful. It poorly explained each topic. It bounced around in each section as opposed to sticking with what it was talking about and then flowing into its next topic. I do not know if it is because I am a "straight to the point" kind of person, but this textbook did not do that. I would HIGHLY suggest the study guide and reviewing the summaries at the end of each chapter if this pertains to any Colorado college students as of 2016. It really helped me acheive an "A" in the class in addition to other internet resources. The textbook just really sucked (at least for me).

A classic work available again

In 1855 Franz Delitzsch published his original "System of Biblical Psychology". In 1861 he published a second, updated edition, and in 1866 it was translated from the German to English. This particular translation was first published in 1899 and this is the newest printing of that publication. From the beginning the reader must understand the word psychology as it is used within the work. Franz Delitzsch takes the position that the Bible provides an exhaustive examination of human nature. Throughout the stories, wisdom, and poetry is an account of human nature and how human act and react in various situations. With that in mind, an examination of the Bible shows a well-defined system of psychology, a complete treatise on human nature. As such, a study of Biblical psychology should have as its purpose to "bring out the views of Scripture regarding the nature, the life and life-destinies of the soul, as they are determined in the history of salvation".
Franz Delitzsch thoroughly examines this relationship between man and God, man and self, and man and his fellow man as viewed through the lens of the Bible. Major headings include pre-existence, creation, the fall, man's natural condition, the regeneration, death, and resurrection and consummation. The section on man's natural condition is particularly interesting. In it he discusses the personality, the soul, the powers of the soul, development of the threefold life, soul and blood, heart and head, health and sickness, natural and demoniacal sickness, and superstition and magic.
After each section Dr. Delitzsch included an appendix with appropriate information for that section. This is a nice touch as it provides the related information at the point in the book where it was studied. If you want to understand Biblical psychology as it was understood in the late 1800s you can't go wrong with this book. In a single volume it presents the complete understanding of the main-line theologians of the time and forms a solid basis for a historical study of Biblical psychology. This is a very highly recommended book for anyone interested in this area of study.

The book is the foundation of reclaiming the term "psychology" to it's rightful place. It is fundamental for the study of the soul from a biblical perspective. We need biblical psychology back in the drivers seat!

This paperback version is VERY poor quality

The version by General Books looks like a computer ocr output which has not been edited. The first page has a number of typos in the first few lines. Many paragraphs start with a sentence fragment, suggesting that some text was lost.

I will be returning this book.

I suggest others look for a different version.

Midnight Marriage by Lucinda Brant, a book review

Midnight Marriage by Lucinda Brant is a Georgian romance inspired by true historical events. In Midnight Marriage, a young girl of only twelve and a rebellious youth are wed in a ceremony conducted in the dark of night. Then the youth is whisked away by his father, and the young girl returned to her bed. She does not clearly remember the incident as she was drugged. Years later, as an adult, she meets him again but does not realize she is wed to him. He wishes to win her heart without her knowing of his noble title, and on his own merits. They wed again as adults. The rub comes when she learns his real identity and realizes that she has been deceived.

There is plenty of subterfuge in this tale, with several subplots skillfully woven throughout. This well-written historical romance clearly illustrates the author's talent for story-telling. It is engaging, authentic, and comfortably paced. The dialogue is believable and stays true to its period. The settings, outfits, and behavior of the characters are portrayed in delicious detail.

This is a book I would highly recommend to any readers who like a sweet historical romance rife with intrigue and complicated by societal expectations of the time.

One Georgian Historical Romance you have to read!

"Well if you like "Noble Satyr" book one of the Roxton series, you are going to love "Midnight Marriage" by Lucinda Brant. I seriously have devoured Lucinda as an author as her writing flows so well for a book of this era. Lucinda captivates you from the beginning and you won't be able to put this down.

This wonderful Georgian Historical Romance involves a captivating young lady with striking red hair, Deborah. She is a breath of fresh air and goes about her ways inwhich she shouldn't for a young lady unwed. Any gentlemen would indeed love to take her hand in marriage on her beauty alone. But she isn't interested in anyone for his noble status, she is waiting for mister right, a man that truely, deeply loves her and her alone.

Deborah continues to measure every man up to the man she dreams about in her sleep. Dreams of this perfect man that has invaded her nightdreams since she was 12. Does she find this man? Or Does she do the right thing and marry a man to uphold the families reputation.

I like that this book can be read as a stand alone book, but you will love it that much wanting to know more about the roxtons: "noble satyr is the 1st book of the series then "midnight marriage". And yay book three is in the making right now.

All i will say is that there is a midnight marriage.... sword fights and carriages pulled along coble stones with beautiful ladies dressed in gowns ready for a ball. Just as i thought Lucindas books couldnt get anybetter, this did. So sit down, relax with a
high tea and your best sunday dress on, loosing yourself in the world of the Roxton series. (Roxton is a Duke by the way). :)

The Rake Returns for his Bride

Impressive! Sequels aren't generally as powerful as the first book, but Lucinda Brant proves the exception.
This is a sequel to 'Noble Satyr'. Both books have a Heyeresque feel to them and as I said in the first books review, that is a good thing. The historical backdrop of Georgian England (Bath)/France (Paris) was still there (foreshadowings of the French Revolution and unrest), but the focus was on the H/H. The intrigue and plot turns were good- things are rarely what they seem. I like how the story begins with an inexplicable event and then unravels to explain it and the consequences of it. The characters were ones with which I could be sympathetic. It was nice to meet up with favorite characters from the first book and oh so bittersweet to see them as the older generation. -; But that is life.

Probably the best book out there

Solid. Probably the best book out there.

It won't get super detailed and can sometimes be too simple. Probably M3/M4 or early residency level.

Probably not as good as Pocket Med but better than the other pocket books from this series (as a note, pocket primary care is also very good and covers PC complaints better than this book). This is pure EM.

Excellent book though. I'm being critical here - it's probably the best EM book for the levels I talked about. It's all bullets so you kind of need to know what you're reading about to make sense of it. It's not a primary learning source. It's to jog your memory. Bullets.

Helpful for PA Emergency Medicine Rotation

This was an excellent reference for my Emergency Medicine rotation. I was able to quickly get the information I needed based on the chief complaint including important historical information, differential diagnosis, and recommended labs/imaging. There is also a small section on pediatric emergencies and common chief complaints which was helpful since I have limited experience with pediatrics.

A Guide For Prayer

I haven't finished reading this book yet, but I'm half way done and so far this is a really good book to read. I was struggling with prayer meaning I was having a hard time communicating with God. Every time I would try to get down on my knees and pray I would be distracted, I couldn't stay focus and at times I didn't know what to even say. Sometimes I watch Dr. Charles Stanley programs and that's how I found out about the book. At the time it seemed like the perfect book to help me get where I needed to be in my prayer life and I was right. If you are someone struggling with prayer this maybe a great guide for you. After that just let your heart and love for Christ be your motivation for having a relationship with the Father. I think even those who are strong in their faith can learn something from this book. It is very encouraging and filled with the truth. Only a man who is truly gifted would be able to deliver such strong and passionate words the way that Dr. Charles Stanley did in this book.

A great book about prayer

I loved this book and how easy to understand Dr. Stanley made the subject of prayer. His writing style is what makes this book a great study book on talking with the Lord. I gave this book 5/5 stars. I liked how the book gave practical steps to growing in your relationship with the Lord through prayer. I really liked how much he talked about how the Lord wants to talk with us. You will feel so loved and accepted by the Lord after reading this book. Your desire to pray will also grow immensely as you learn how easy it is to talk to the Lord and how much He wants you to talk with Him. I would recommend this book to anyone who desires a better prayer life or who needs to be reminded how important prayer is!

I would like to thank the publisher for the copy of this book I enjoyed reading. I gave an honest review based on my opinion of what I read.

The ultimate resource for the Enlish language

If you love words, there is no equal

At least Oxford University Press keeps trying. This is the 4th electronic version of the venerable Oxford English Dictionary. Each of the earlier versions had problems galore that Oxford was very lax in resolving or sometimes even admitting. Among the many small cruelties, you had to reinsert the data disk every 90 days. Or the failure to adapt to Windows Vista. Ah, well, if you want all those words at your fingertips, such suffering is a price to be paid.

Happily, 4.0 seems pretty stable. Gone is the insanity of needing to reinsert the data disk. OED 4.0 runs smoothly on Vista. Still missing are synonyms. Oxford is missing a profit opportunity by not including a thesaurus add-on. They have a print version: why not make it electronic?

The user interface is cleaned up from earlier versions.

Spelling errors still result in no match rather than presenting you with a list of possibilities. Using the two wildcards is your own option.

The advanced Search is a relatively primitive Boolean mechanism that provides you three terms to match in either the word entries or quotations using AND/OR/NOT operators. Frankly, it isn't all that advanced, but it will do.

When the OED is open, you can double-click on any word and the OED will display the definition. (Windows-only feature.) Mac users need to copy the word to the clipboard.

Speaking of copying, you can only copy the entire OED entry, which can be huge in many cases. Thus, you transfer it to a note application and then extract what you need. Cumbersome to say the least, but as paranoid as Oxford is about illegal copying, it keeps people from easily creating their own dictionaries.

The help function is browser based and reasonably thorough. There is, happily, a list for all the abbreviations used in the OED and any serious word hunter will be using it.

The joy of the OED, of course, is the words. More than 500,000 words defined and 2.5 million quotations demonstrating their use. Paradise for a writer or anyone entranced with the English language. Although, in terms of use, there are other electronic dictionaries that I prefer for ease of use and online references as well, the OED remains the absolute authority and I treasure it. Warts and all, I have grown up with it in print (the tiny print version with the magnifying glass) and all its electronic versions.

The OED is and remains the superlative resource for the English language.

Oxford English Dictionary - technical review

There have been many reviews of the literary content of the OED, this review doesn't approach that subject, rather as this is a software product my review discusses the technical implementation and the updates since the previous 3.1 release of this software.

Version 4.0 is the first version of the OED CD-ROM that supports the Macintosh operating system, having previously been available as a Windows application only. This review is written from the perspective of a Macintosh owner.

This release as stated on the packaging, is a hybrid CD-ROM, both Windows and Macintosh versions. The CD-ROMs themselves state that it uses 'SecureROM' copy protection, however from what I can tell this copy protection is missing on the Macintosh entirely.

The install process involved copying two parts of a compressed disk image (DMG) from the CD-ROMs onto my hard-drive, then simply opening the DMG and copying out the 'OED v4.0.app' into my Applications folder. There was no activation required, it simply ran after I extracted it from the install media. While I can't promise a similar user experience for Windows users, having had to deal with the Windows copy-protection in older versions I can say this is a welcome feature.

The user interface has been updated a bit, but still feels fairly clunky. For the gear-heads out there It's based on 'haXe' and 'nekoVM' so there's little if any customization available. On the Mac it hooks cut/paste to do automatic word lookup, but there is no integration with the Macintosh dictionary framework which is a bit of a disappointment, although clearly stated on OED's website.

There are roughly 300,000 words on the CD-ROM version, vs. the Oxford American English Dictionary which ships with Macintosh computers which has less than a third of that -- so there is a difference if you're wondering.

Dictionary lookups are fairly quick and the content if you've read a printed OED will be unsurprisingly similar for obvious reasons.

All in all, I consider this a great step forward for OED in that Macintosh is supported, as well that the draconian copy-protection of 3.1 appears to not be inflicted on Macintosh users.

I consider this worth the money simply in having it at my fingertips and not having to endure the ad-spam of[..]. I would have rated it 5 stars had there been integration with Macintosh's dictionary framework so that the data would be available through the OS supported search/lookup mechanisms, for lack of that feature I felt it worthy of dinging a star off.

weak interface to a magnificent human effort

A software interface to the Oxford English Dictionary has enormous potential, which is only partially realized in this version.

Rudimentary searching is available. Which only makes me wish for more: a search pattern language for example.

Simple wildcard searches -- that match any number of characters ("*"), or match single characters ("?") are available; but you can't, for example, straightforwardly find all words with 5 letters or less that end in "ish"? ( An "*ish" (dictionary find) search will return 3411 matches of arbitrary lengths. A "??ish" (dictionary find) search returns 50 matches, of just length 5. )

The advanced search facility, while having more functionality, doesn't have a search pattern language either, beyond the two wildcard characters. There are some filters, for case-sensitivity, parts of speech, and two extra boolean ("and", "or", "not") search fields -- but no pattern language. Phonetic searches are limited in the same way.

Advanced search is buggy, and time-consuming. Some searches work; some freeze up the system. After which one has to quit and restart the application, to do another search. (Operating system: OSX 10.5.8)

Formatting of entries is primitive, and hard to read.

The Dictionary application, developed by Apple for its Macintosh computers, (introduced with Mac OS X v10.4) which is based on the New Oxford American Dictionary and the Oxford American Writer's Thesaurus, -- does a beautiful job formatting, by comparison). It comes free as part of the Mac software. It is also linked to other applications running on the Mac, so you can look up a word you don't know -- on the fly. The search facility, however, is even more limited than OED version 4.0.

Perhaps Oxford University Press and Apple could combine efforts?

I regard the OED as a human resource of treasury quality, and look forward to a software interface to it, of the quality it deserves.

Literally Drew Blood!

I thought when I ordered the books that all this thrash about the packaging MUST be overblown. But this is, without a doubt the worst packaging I've ever dealt with. Though the plastic case was damaged in shipping it was still a struggle to free the books. When pulled apart (which is what a small sticker on one of the books advises) the plastic shattered. One piece dug into the palm of my hand and gave me a pretty decent gash. Other smaller fragments ended up all over my room. All I could think was thank God I didn't lose an eye! Even then I only succeeded in liberating one book.

The books themselves are very nice, and were only slighty damaged in the ludicrous struggle to liberate them from the case. It's comical that they come in the worst designed packaging you can imagine.

So while I would recommend the books, I also strongly suggest protective eye wear for the unboxing.

UPDATE: typos galore! + Alert them to the need for "special packing" of this item

I've already reviewed this book, and made a complaint about its packaging. But now, after having read it cover-to-cover, I was both delighted and dismayed. As a graphic designer, I have an "eagle eye" for design errors and typographical mistakes, but I also can pick out typos easily. I wished an editor had gone through the galleys thoroughly before it went to print. After about fifty mistakes I said to myself, "I should have been flagging these, then sell them to Phaidon for the next printing." I was too lazy, and continued on to find at least another fifty! One page had a paragraph repeat four times (as if the designer was filling a space, waiting for the "expanded" copy to come in to replace it). Shame on you Phaidon for putting so much effort into photography rights, etc. and barely anything into typography and editing.

Original review: One problem with the case and the sheer weight of this product is that it's likely to suffer damage if not carefully packed. While Amazon does have some of the best packing in the industry (especially the shrink-to-a-pallet books that cannot move to potentially damage it's corners), this item in particular was shipped to me using only air bags and a rather thin, large box. The plastic case was severly damaged, but amazingly the books weren't. Customer service was again incredibly accommodating to solving my problem of this damaged item by taking 20% off rather than the hassle of return and replace, which actually would have cost Amazon more. Plus I would have had to carry the nearly 30 lbs to the UPS store!

She was also insightful enough to suggest I make a comment on the product page re my experience so that Amazon's shipping department can take special care shipping this product to avoid it's damage. Maybe use "peanuts" instead, or some other method that ensures the weight doesn't make it jostle under the hostile conditions "handler" use with any package--book or chandelier!

Well worth the (Amazon) price

An outstanding design resource which will no doubt soon become a ubiquitous electric-yellow prop on the bookshelves in style magazines, modern furniture catalogs, and lofts of urban trendoids everywhere. It should look nice next to Rem Koolhaas's "S, M, L, XL". All kidding aside, it's well worth the (Amazon) price. Although I must agree with the previous reviewer who pointed out the poorly designed and tacky plastic "carrying case". Ironic that a design encyclopedia would make such a design mistake. Also, I question whether enough time has passed to justify the "design classic" title bestowed upon many of the more recent entries.

Preface

This book aims to present a synthesis of a wide range of ethnographic and historical data concerning the roles of women and men in different kinds of societies. It focuses on both material conditions and ideological valuations that affect and reflect cultural models of gender.

The third edition of Women and Men: Cultural Constructs of Gender contains a new chapter, a revision of chapters on gender and language, as well as expanded discussions of a number of topics interspersed throughout the book. The new chapter (7), "Global Economic Development," discusses the effects of economic development programs on women's and men's economic, social, and political roles. Chapter 10, "Gender and Language," is a revision of material covered in two chapters in the previous edition. It combines data on language and language from English and from several non-Indo-European languages spoken in other parts of the world.

Part 1: The Impact of Material Conditions on Gender Roles

Chapter 1 considers the notion of gender as a social construct. It discusses interrelationships of gender and other aspects of culture (economy, social and political organization, and religion), which form the basis for the presentation of data and theory in subsequent chapters.

Chapter 2 considers gender roles and relations in several societies whose economic base is centered on foraging. Comparison is made between the Ju/'hoansi ( ju-TWAN-si) in Namibia and Botswana and the Inuit and Inupiat of Arctic Canada and Alaska.

Gender roles in pastoral and farming societies are discussed in Chapter 3. The groups considered include nomadic pastoral societies of the American Plains, mixed pastoral and farming societies (the Navajo, Nuer, and Luo), and horticultural societies such as the Iroquois of North America, the Yanomamo and Jivaro of the Amazon, and the Igbo of Nigeria.

In Chapter 4 is a discussion of gender roles in stratified societies, concentrating on peoples of the Canadian Pacific coast (the Haida and Tlingit), the Kpelle of Liberia, the Mpondo of the Transkei, and the Tonga of Polynesia. Interrelationship between increased stratification and gender inequality is demonstrated to varying degrees in these societies.

The existence of marked gender inequality in agricultural states is discussed in Chapter 5, exemplified by the Incan society of Peru and the modern states of India and China. Chapter 6 analyzes the historical development of industrialization in the United States in terms of its use of and impact on gender inequalities in preexisting societies. Utilization of women's labor in early industrialization and the subsequent marginalization of women in advanced industrial nations are discussed. Finally, Chapter 7 reviews processes of global economic development and demonstrates their effect on women's and men's roles and relationships.

Part 2: Ideological Constraints on Gender Constructs

Chapter 8 examines several worldwide issues concerning the interrelationships among gender, health, and survival. It also contains a new, detailed discussion of a third gender, a social category existing in many native cultures of North America that was distinct from the genders of woman and man. In addition, women's so-called reproductive illnesses—namely, premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and menopausal disorders—are discussed as examples of societal attitudes that label women's normal biological functions as illnesses requiring control and correction.

The function of religious beliefs and practices in justifying and reinforcing gender roles and relations is the focus of Chapter 9. It now includes three new sections on topics dealing with gender and religion. Female genital mutilation is described and analyzed within the context of negative attitudes toward women's sexuality and the social/religious justifications given to control and punish women's natural desires. A discussion of religion and homosexuality examines religious proscriptions against and prescriptions for sexual relations between members of the same sex. And, finally, the chapter includes a review of some tendencies within the women's spirituality movement.

Chapter 10 considers evidence of the role of language in maintaining and reproducing societal gender relations. It begins with an examination of English and English speakers and then proceeds with discussion of language in a variety of cultures. Data are derived from Japanese, Javanese, Malagasy (Madagascar), Kuna (Panama), and Mohawk (Native North America), with French, German, and Spanish briefly noted.

Finally, Chapter 11 summarizes the main arguments presented in our analyses of gender roles and relations. It also examines the impact of historical forces of change on gender models. The chapter concludes with a discussion of ideological barriers to changing beliefs and attitudes of gender but, in the end, stresses the possibility of individual and societal transformation.
