    To the Student

Welcome! You're about to embark on a journey that is far from ordinary. Over the course of this term, you will discover the central role the oceans play in the vast global system of which you are a part.

The book's content was carefully developed to provide a foundation in science by examining the vast body of oceanic knowledge. This knowledge includes information from a variety of scientific disciplines—geology, chemistry, physics, and biology—as they relate to the oceans. However, no formal background in any of these disciplines is required to successfully master the subject matter contained within this book. Our desire is to have you take away from your oceanography course much more than just a collection of facts. Instead, we want, you to develop a fundamental understanding of how the oceans work.

This book is intended to help you in your quest to know more about the oceans. Taken as a whole, the components of the ocean—its sea floor, chemical constituents, physical components, and life forms—comprise one of Earth's largest interacting, interrelated, and interdependent systems. Because humans are beginning to impact Earth systems, it is important to understand not only how the oceans operate, but also how the oceans interact with Earth's other systems (such as its atmosphere, biosphere, and hydrosphere) as part of a larger picture. Thus, this book uses a systems approach to highlight the interdisciplinary relationship between oceanographic phenomena and how those phenomena affect other Earth systems.

To that end—and to help you make the most of your study time—we focused the presentation in this book by organizing the material around three essential components:

  • Concepts: General ideas derived or inferred from specific instances or occurrences (for instance, the concept of density can be used to explain why the oceans are layered).
  • Processes: Actions or occurrences that bring about a result (for instance, the process of waves breaking at an angle to the shore results in the movement of sediment along the shoreline).
  • Principles: Rules or laws concerning the functioning of natural phenomena or mechanical processes (for instance, the principle of sea floor spreading suggests that the geographic positions of the continents have changed through time).
  • Interwoven within these concepts, processes, and principles are hundreds of photographs, illustrations, real-world examples, and applications that make the material relevant and accessible (and maybe sometimes even entertaining) by bringing the science to life.

New in this edition are web-based Environmental Issues in Oceanography (EIO) features that are designated within selected chapters by a special notation. Each EIO calls attention to a content-related environmental concern, many of which are the result of human interaction with the marine environment. The EIO features are web-based activities with worksheets in an accompanying workbook. The EIO exercises have been specially designed by two dedicated environmental scientists (Dan Abel of Coastal Carolina University and Robert McConnell of Mary Washington College). Page xix of this Preface explains the EIO feature in more detail.

Ultimately, it is our hope that by understanding how the oceans work, you will develop a new awareness and appreciation of all aspects of the marine environment and its role in Earth systems. To this end, the book has been written for you, the student of the oceans. So enjoy and immerse yourself! You're in for an exciting ride.

    To the Instructor

The seventh edition of Essentials of Oceanography is designed to accompany an introductory college-level course in general or physical oceanography taught to students with no formal background in mathematics or science. Like previous editions, the goal of this edition of the textbook is to clearly present the relationships of scientific principles to ocean phenomena in an engaging and meaningful way. Further, this edition has benefited from being thoroughly student reviewed and edited by hundreds of students.

This edition has also been reviewed by a dozen instructors from leading institutions across the country. As one reviewer of the sixth edition stated, "The material is presented in a nicely organized fashion, with clarity and in a readable style. The diagrams are well done and the tables neatly delineate passages of text into a simple, presentable form. The boxes provide interesting diversions to the text, and are nicely linked in terms of their general interest and importance to the chapter material. The `Students Sometimes Ask...' sections are a neat trick for engaging the reader in additional topics, and these follow nicely from the level of the chapters."

The 15-chapter format of this textbook is designed for easy coverage of the material in a 15- or 16-week semester. For courses taught on a 10-week quarter system, the instructor may need to select those chapters that cover the topic and concepts of primary relevance to their course. Chapters are self-contained and thus can be covered in any order. Following the introductory chapter (Chapter 1, which covers the general geography of the oceans, a historical perspective of oceanography, the reasoning behind the scientific method, and a discussion of the origin of Earth, the atmosphere, the oceans, and life itself), the four major academic disciplines of oceanography are represented in these chapters:

    • Geological oceanography (Chapters 2, 3, 4, and parts of Chapters 10 and 11)
    • Chemical oceanography (Chapter 5 and part of Chapter 11)
    • Physical oceanography (Chapters 6-9 and parts of Chapters 10 and 11)
    • Biological oceanography (Chapters 12-15)

However, we believe that oceanography is at its best when it links together several scientific disciplines and shows how they are interrelated in the oceans. Therefore, this interdisciplinary approach is a key element of every chapter.

One of the major additions to this edition of the text is the inclusion of web-based "Environmental Issues in Oceanography" (EIO) features within selected chapters. EIO features are on-line projects designed to: add relevance to the material by tying the concepts in the text to environmental issues, involve students in critical-thinking exercises, and help students better evaluate and understand the ecological significance of problems that have been in the forefront of recent news stories. Each EIO can be found on-line at http://www.prenhall.com/oceanissues and the projects can be completed in the accompanying workbook for submission. The EIO projects are authored by two environmental scientists (Dan Abel of Coastal Carolina University and Robert McConnell of Mary Washington College) with a special interest in critical thinking regarding environmental issues. Page xix of this Preface explains the EIO feature in more detail.

    What's New in this Edition?

Changes in this edition are designed to increase the readability, relevance, and appeal of this book. The major changes include:

In the last few years, researchers around the world have increasingly reported the importance of acid-alkaline balance. The Acid-Alkaline Food Guide was designed as an easy-to-follow guide to the most common foods that influence your body’s pH level. Now in its Second Edition, this bestseller has been expanded to include many more domestic and international foods. Updated information also explores (and refutes) the myths about pH balance and diet, and guides the reader to supplements that can help the body achieve a healthy pH level.

The Acid-Alkaline Food Guide begins by explaining how the acid-alkaline environment of the body is influenced by foods. It then presents a list of thousands of foods and their acid-alkaline effects. Included are not only single foods, such as fruits and vegetables, but also popular combination and even common fast foods. In each case, you’ll not only discover whether a food is acidifying or alkalizing, but also learn the degree to which that food affects the body. Informative insets guide you in choosing the food that’s right for you.

The first book of its kind―now updated and expanded―The Acid-Alkaline Food Guidewill quickly become the resource you turn to at home, in restaurants, and whenever you want to select a food that can help you reach your health and dietary goals.

The importance of diet has been a basic tenet of traditional healing systems around the world for many centuries. A wholesome diet not only helps to maintain health, but can also play a vital role in recovery from disease. On the other hand, it is an indisputable fact that unhealthy dietary patterns are a primary contributing factor in most disease conditions.

Our understanding of how and why certain foods can significantly help to improve health, while other foods can accelerate the disease process, grows each year as scientists continue their quest to uncover Nature’s secrets. One of the most exciting nutritional discoveries concerns the effects that different foods have on the body’s pH levels once they are consumed. Simply put, some foods, once they are metabolized, create an acidic effect within the body, while others act as alkalizing agents that can neutralize harmful acids. To be healthy, it is necessary to be in a state of acid-alkaline (acid-base) balance. Humans have, in fact, a genetically encoded requirement for a dietary balance of acid-forming and alkaline-forming foods. Because of our early ancestors’ abundant intake of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds, we evolved on diets high in organic mineral compounds―particularly alkalizing forms of potassium, magnesium, and calcium. We still need these compounds in order to maintain our internal acid-alkaline balance. But, as you will discover, contemporary eating patterns are at odds with our ancient biological machinery, much to the detriment of our health.

It has been rightly said that both health and disease begin in the cells, for it is at the cellular level that the vast majority of the body’s multitude of interactions occur. For example, in order for the body’s cells to function properly, they need to receive life-giving nutrients and oxygen from the bloodstream, and at the same time, they need to release cellular wastes. As it turns out, both of these interactions can optimally take place only when the body is in a slightly alkaline state, which allows for an easy flow of oxygen and nutrients into the cell walls and an equally easy disposal of cellular waste. When the body becomes chronically acidic, however, these and many other cellular processes start to become impaired. Eventually, if acidity continues unchecked, the combination of a diminished oxygen and nutrient supply to the cells and the buildup of wastes inside the cells sets into motion both fatigue and disease.

It’s precisely for this reason that both the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association―along with the American Medical Association and most other health organizations―recommend a minimum of five servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Why are fruits and vegetables so important? Because, as suggested above, most fruits and vegetables are high in compounds that help to keep your body in the slightly alkaline state that medical research continues to demonstrate is the ideal internal environment for achieving and maintaining optimal health.

As you will learn in the chapters ahead, the importance of maintaining proper acid-alkaline balance is not a new concept. In fact, it has been written about in medical textbooks for more than a century. Only in the last few years, however, has the concept of chronic, low-grade acidosis started to make its way to the public at large, primarily through infomercials and select books. Unfortunately, such information is all too often tied into products for which dubious claims are made, or associated with dietary plans that are too restrictive for most people. But, at this same time, a small number of brilliant scientists from around the world have recognized, and are studying, the phenomenon of chronic, low-grade metabolic acidosis. Scientists such as Dr. Lynda Frassetto at the University of California, San Francisco, and Dr. Russell Jaffe of ELISA/ACT Biotechnologies, Inc., have documented that on the whole, the average Western diet is acid-producing, and that it actually creates a low-grade metabolic acidosis in otherwise healthy people. Dozens of such studies have further documented the negative impact that chronic low-grade metabolic acidosis has on health. Osteoporosis, age-related muscle loss, kidney stone formation, gout and other joint diseases, and back pain are among the conditions associated with the move towards an even slightly acidic state. While not life threatening, this low-level acid condition compromises our health.

Since the original publication of The Acid-Alkaline Food Guide, there has been a surge of interest in the relationship between diet and acid-alkaline balance within both the scientific community and the lay public. While this is an evolving science, in the last few years, research has provided a fuller understanding of how and why acid-alkaline balance is so important for maintaining good health, as well as how eating patterns that disrupt this balance can cause or exacerbate many of the chronic disease conditions that are now so prevalent. (For further information, visit Dr. Brown’s websites, www.betterbones.com and www.alkalineforlife.com. Also see the Bibliography, starting on page 185.)

Today, in the United States and other highly Westernized countries, chronic low-grade acidosis is more the rule than the exception. This is largely due to poor eating and lifestyle habits. We are, in fact, forcing our bodies to labor within a less-than-optimal biochemical environment. The body’s adaptation to even mild but chronic metabolic acidosis involves stresses and strains that create a fertile breeding ground for the various forms of chronic illness that are now experienced by more than one out of every three Americans.

Since your diet dramatically affects acid-alkaline balance either positively or negatively, you might ask yourself how you can change any unhealthy eating habits in a safe and practical manner―without having to make drastic changes. The Acid-Alkaline Food Guide was written precisely to answer that question. In the pages that follow, you will find listings of literally hundreds of our most commonly eaten foods―including nearly one hundred entries new to this second edition―along with an easy-to-understand statement of how each food will affect your body’s pH levels once it is consumed and digested. This new edition also includes a range of foods from different nations. Once you know the effects of these foods, you will be able to quickly and effectively create healthy meal plans using the foods you already enjoy.

The Acid-Alkaline Food Guide is the first and only book of its kind to provide this information in such extensive detail. Moreover, the information that it contains is based on hard science―on research conducted specifically to determine the effects that various foods have on the body’s acid-alkaline balance. In this book, you will discover:

    • What acid-alkaline balance involves and why it is so important to your health.
    • How an acid-alkaline imbalance encourages the development of disease.
    • Which health disorders are associated with a state of chronic, low-grade acid-alkaline imbalance.
    • How to estimate your own acid-alkaline balance.
    • How to quickly determine whether a food will produce an acidifying or alkalizing effect on your body.
    • How to use the food tables presented in this book to create healthy meals throughout the day.
    • How to use nutritional supplements to speed your journey to vibrant health.
    • What the most common myths are regarding diet and acid-alkaline balance, and why these beliefs are wrong.

More than 2,500 years ago, the Greek physician Hippocrates said that food should be our first and most important “medicine.” Now, in the twenty-first century, the truth of that adage has never been clearer. It is our hope that The Acid-Alkaline Food Guide will empower you to make wise food choices that result in good health and vitality for both you and your loved ones.

Good Book but don't go nuts over what food to eat
    By coconutcreamcare
When I first heard of the pH balance I went nuts. What food is good what food is bad then I realized your body is very complex and what test on a pH scale as either acid or alkaline may get converted by your body to just the reverse. Lemons for an example test acid but are one of the highest alkaline foods you can feed you body. So what you do is generally get an understanding of the major alkaline type foods and forget sugar which is acid. Acid hates oxygen and the more acid you eat the less oxygen your muscles and body get.
Drop the sugar and drink a raw lemon juiced daily.

    Review
Praise for A Study in Scarlet Women

"Clever historical details and a top-shelf mystery add to the winning appeal of this first volume in the “Lady Sherlock” series. A must-read for fans of historical mysteries."—Library Journal (starred review)

“RITA Award–winning romance writer Thomas has come up with a completely new, brilliantly conceived take on the iconic detective. She not only offers some clever changes to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s cherished cast of characters, she also delivers a plot worthy of the master at his best.”—Booklist

“Clever and absorbing. Thomas’s gorgeous prose and expert characterizations shine in this new incarnation of Sherlock Holmes. Readers will wait with baited breath to discover how Thomas will skillfully weave in each aspect of the Sherlockian canon, and devour the pages to learn how the mystery unfolds.”—Anna Lee Huber, National Bestselling Author of the Lady Darby Mysteries

“Gender bending is just the first sign that unusual happenings are afoot in this origin story for a revamped Sherlock Holmes series by bestselling author Thomas...There is also a tantalizing, slow-burn love story between Holmes and a longtime friend befitting Thomas' skills as a romance novelist....The ground has been laid well for future incidents in the professional and intimate life of Charlotte Holmes.”—Kirkus Reviews

“Author Sherry Thomas didn’t just insert Charlotte into Sherlock’s area of expertise, she made a character completely different from the well-known man. Cute and blonde, Charlotte doesn’t have Sherlock’s scorn for everyone. And because she is a lady in Victorian England, Charlotte has to be creative in her investigation in order to preserve the illusion of Sherlock Holmes to the man on the street and the police. The various characters introduced are quite interesting and the plotlines are great. This is the first in the new Lady Sherlock series, and if this is any clue, Charlotte and her continuing adventures will be thrilling to read.”—Suspense Magazine

"Sherry Thomas is a master of her craft, and A Study in Scarlet Women is an unqualified success: brilliantly executed, beautifully written, and magnificently original – I want the next volume now!"—Tasha Alexander, New York Times Bestselling Author of A Terrible Beauty

More Praise for Sherry Thomas and her Novels

“Sherry Thomas has done the impossible and crafted a fresh, exciting new version of Sherlock Holmes. From the carefully plotted twists to the elegant turns of phrase, A Study in Scarlet Women is a splendid addition to Holmes’s world. This book is everything I hoped it would be, and the next adventure cannot come too soon!”—Deanna Raybourn, New York Times bestselling author

“Sherry Thomas…is a rebel, a rule-breaker, and, above all, a romantic…[Her] writing is nothing short of a revelation.”—Lisa Kleypas, New York Times bestselling author

“Thomas is known for a lush style…[and] transporting prose even as [she] delivers on heat and emotion and a well-earned happily ever after.”—The New York Times Book Review

“Ravishingly sinful, intelligent, and addictive.”—Eloisa James, New York Times bestselling author

    Prologue

    Devonshire, England

    1886

Had anyone told the Honorable Harrington Sackville that the investigation into his death would make the name Sherlock Holmes known throughout the land, Mr. Sackville would have scoffed.

He had never heard of Sherlock Holmes. But more importantly, he despised the idea of death. Of his death, to be precise—others could die as they wished.

He loathed old age almost as much: that long, vile decline into helplessness halted only by the final breath, falling like a guillotine blade.

And yet his reflection in the mirror made it increasingly difficult to tell himself that he was still a young man. He remained a fit man, a handsome man, but the skin beneath his jaw sagged. Deep grooves cut into the sides of his mouth. Even his eyelids drooped, heavy from the passage of time.

Fear hooked through him, cold and sharp. Every man was afraid of something. For him, death had long loomed as the ultimate terror. A darkness with fangs.

He turned away from the mirror—and the unwelcome thoughts that always simmered these days a scant inch beneath the surface. It was summer. The glow of twilight suffused the house. From his perch on the headlands, the bay blazed with the flame of the setting sun. A hint of salt fragranced the breeze that meandered in; the top note of that perfumed air was tuberose, bulbs of which he had imported from Grasse, in the south of France.

But a storm was coming; inky clouds gathered at the edge of the sky . . .

He inhaled deeply. No, he must not let his mind wander to shadowy places. Recent weeks had been difficult—the events in London particularly distressing—but in time things would improve. He still had many good years left to relish life, and to laugh at death and its still distant grasp.

No premonitions crossed his mind that death was to have him by morning.

But have him it would—and the last laugh.

    Chapter 1

    London

On the day Mr. Harrington Sackville met his darkness with fangs, certain parties in the know were bracing for—and eagerly anticipating—a major scandal involving the youngest member of the Holmes family.

Lord Ingram Ashburton did not share in their anticipation. The idea that such a catastrophe could come to pass had haunted him for days. He did not yet know that Holmes was already doomed, but a sense of dread had been growing in him, a tumorlike weight on his lungs.

He stared at the envelope on the desk before him.

    Mr. Sherlock Holmes,

    General Post Office,

    St. Martin’s Le Grand,

    London.

Any idiot could see the frustration that seethed with every stroke of the pen—at several places the nib had nearly torn through the linen paper.

The writing on the note next to the envelope was equally agitated.

    Holmes,

    Don’t.

And if you must, not with Roger Shrewsbury. You will regret it relentlessly.

For once in your life, listen to me.

He dropped his forehead into his left palm. It would be no use. Holmes would do as Holmes pleased, carried along on that blitheness born of extraordinary ability and favorable circumstances.

    Until disaster strikes.

You don’t need to let it happen, said a voice inside him. You step in. You give Holmes what Holmes wants.

And then what? Then I carry on and pretend it never happened?

He stared out of the open window. His unimpeded view of the sky appeared as if seen through a lens that had been smudged with a grimy finger—a polluted blue, a fine day for London. Peals of irrepressible mirth rose from the small park below—his children’s laughter, a sound that would have brought a smile to his face on any other day.

    He picked up his pen.

Do not do anything without first consulting me again.

    Please.

Was he acquiescing? Was he jettisoning all caution—and all principle as well?

He sealed the unsigned letter in the envelope and walked out of his book-lined study, envelope in pocket. He was scheduled to give an archeological lecture in the evening. But first he wanted to spend some time with his daughter and son, rambunctious children at the peak of their happy innocence.

After that he would decide whether to post the letter or to consign it to the fire, like the dozen others that had preceded it.

The front door opened and in came his wife.

    “Afternoon, madam,” he said politely.

“My lord.” She nodded, a strange little smile on her face. “I see you have not heard about what happened to your favorite lady.”

“My favorite lady is my daughter. Is anything the matter with her?”

He kept his voice cool, but he couldn’t stop the hair on the back of his neck from standing up: Lady Ingram was not talking about their child.

“Lucinda is well. I refer to . . .” Her lips curled with disdain. “I refer to Holmes. Your Holmes.”

“How dare you humiliate me this way?” Mrs. Shrewsbury rained down blows on her husband. “How dare you?”

The painted French fan, folded up, made for a surprisingly potent weapon—a cross between a bolt of silk and a police baton. Roger Shrewsbury whimpered.

He didn’t understand the way her mind worked.

Very well, he had committed an unforgivable error: The night before he’d been so drunk he mistook his wife for Mimi, his mistress, and told the wife what he was going to do this afternoon with Charlotte Holmes. But if Mrs. Shrewsbury hadn’t wanted him to deflower Miss Holmes, why hadn’t she smacked him then and there and forbidden him to do anything of the sort? Or she could have gone ’round to Miss Holmes’s and slapped her for not having a higher regard for her hymen.

Instead she had mustered a regiment of sisters, cousins, and friends, set his mother at the helm of the entire enterprise, and stormed the Bastille just as he settled into Miss Holmes. So how could she accuse him of humiliating her, when she was the one who had made sure that a good dozen other women saw her husband in flagrante delicto?

He knew better than to give voice to his thoughts. After twenty-six years as Lady Shrewsbury’s son and three as Anne Shrewsbury’s husband, he’d learned that he was always wrong. The less he said, the better.

The missus continued to hit him. He wrapped his arms around his head, made himself as small as possible, and tried to disappear into a nice memory, a time and a place in which he wasn’t a bounder twenty-four hours a day, three hundred and sixty-five days a year.

Lady Shrewsbury frowned mightily at the young woman who sat opposite her in the brougham. Charlotte Holmes was still, her face pale but composed.

Eerily composed, given she was now ruined beyond repair.

So composed that Lady Shrewsbury, who had been prepared for any amount of hysterical sobbing and frantic pleas, was beginning to feel rattled—a sensation she hadn’t experienced in years.

Lady Shrewsbury had been the one to throw a sheet over the girl. She had then ordered her son to go home with his wife, and the rest of the women to disperse. Miss Holmes had not trembled in a corner, her hands over her face. Nor had she stared numbly at the floor. Instead she had watched the goings-on as if she were a mere bystander, one whose own fate had not in the least taken an unthinkable turn. As Roger was shoved out by his wife, Miss Holmes glanced at him, without anger, loathing, or any reflection of his helplessness.

It had been a sympathetic and apologetic look, the kind the ringleader of a gang of unruly children might give one of her followers, after she had got the latter into unlimited trouble.

Lady Shrewsbury had fully expected this bravado to disintegrate once the others had gone. She was famous for her sternness. Roger, whenever he found himself alone with her, perspired even when she hadn’t planned to inquire into what he had been doing with himself of late.

But her formidableness had no effect on Charlotte Holmes. When the gaggle of eyewitnesses departed to spread the salacious story in drawing rooms all over London, Miss Holmes, instead of dissolving into tears, dressed and ordered a considerable tea service.

Then, under Lady Shrewsbury’s increasingly incredulous gaze, she proceeded to polish off a plate of plum cake, a plate of cherry tartlets, and a plate of sardine and toast. All without saying a single word, or even acknowledging Lady Shrewsbury’s presence.

Lady Shrewsbury controlled her vexation. Silence was one of her greatest weapons and she would not be goaded into abandoning that strategic advantage. Alas, her magnificent silence had no effect on Charlotte Holmes, who dined as if she were a queen and Lady Shrewsbury a lowly lackey, not worthy of even a spare glance.

When the girl was ready to leave, she simply walked out, forcing Lady Shrewsbury to catch up. Again, as if she weren’t a strict moral guardian escorting a fallen woman to her consequences, but a simpleminded maid scampering behind her mistress.

The silence continued in the brougham. Miss Holmes studied the carriages that clogged the street—shiny, lacquered town coaches jostling for space amidst long queues of hansom cabs. From time to time her gaze fell on Lady Shrewsbury and Lady Shrewsbury had the distinct sensation that of the two of them, Miss Holmes considered Lady Shrewsbury the far stranger specimen.

“Have you nothing to say for yourself?” she snapped, unable to stand the silence another second.

“For myself, no,” Charlotte Holmes said softly. “But I hope you will not be too harsh on Roger. He is not to blame for this.”

Inspector Robert Treadles of the Metropolitan Police always enjoyed an outing to Burlington House, especially to attend Lord Ingram’s lectures. They had met via a shared ardor for archeology—Lord Ingram had sponsored Treadles’s entry into the London Society of Antiquaries, in fact.

But this evening his friend was not himself.

To the casual observer, his lordship would seem to command the Society of Antiquaries’s meeting room, thorough in his knowledge, eloquent in his presentation, and deft with a touch of dry humor—his comparison of the ancient family strife caused by variation in size and ornateness of each member’s jeweled brooches with the modern jealousy aroused by the handsomeness of a sibling’s new brougham drew peals of laughter from the audience.

To Inspector Treadles, however, Lord Ingram’s delivery had little of its usual élan. It was a struggle. A futile struggle, moreover: Sisyphus pushing that enormous boulder up the hill, knowing that it would roll away from him near the top, condemning him to start all over again, ad infinitum.

What could be the matter? Lord Ingram was the scion of a ducal family, an Old Etonian, and one of the finest polo players in the world. Of course Inspector Treadles knew that no one’s existence was perfect behind closed doors, but whatever turbulence Lord Ingram navigated in his private life had never before been made visible in his public demeanor.

After the lecture, after the throng of admirers had dispersed, the two men met in a book-lined nook of the society’s soaring library.

“I’d hoped we could dine together, Inspector,” said Lord Ingram. “But I’m afraid I must take leave of you very soon.”

Treadles was both disappointed and relieved—he didn’t think he would be able to offer Lord Ingram much consolation, in the latter’s current state.

“I hope your family is well,” he said.

“They are, thank you. I’m obliged to pay a call on short notice, that is all.” Lord Ingram’s words were calm, yet there was a hollowness to his tone. “I trust we shall have the pleasure of a more leisurely meeting in the not too distant future.”

    “Certainly, my lord.”

Inspector Treadles did not mean to delay his friend, but at that moment he remembered his other purpose for being at Burlington House this evening. “If it isn’t too much trouble, sir, may I ask you to convey a note to Holmes? I’m most grateful for his assistance on the Arkwright case and wrote a few lines to that effect.”

“I am afraid that would be impossible.”

Inspector Treadles almost took a step back at his friend’s expression: a flare of anger that bordered on wrath.

“I understand that you are engaged this evening, my lord,” Treadles explained hesitantly. “My note requires no haste and needs be relayed only at your lordship’s convenience.”

“I’m afraid I didn’t make myself clear,” said Lord Ingram. All hints of rage had left his countenance. His eyes were blank, the set of his jaw hard. “I can’t—nor can anyone else—convey any notes to Holmes. Not anymore.”

“I—I don’t—that is—” Treadles stuttered. “Has something terrible happened?”

Lord Ingram’s jaw worked. “Yes, something terrible.”

    “When?”

    “Today.”

Inspector Treadles blinked. “Is . . . is Holmes still alive?”

    “Yes.”

“Thank goodness. Then we haven’t lost him completely.”

“But we have,” said Lord Ingram, slowly, inexorably. “Holmes may be alive, but the fact remains that Holmes is now completely beyond my reach.”

Treadles’s confusion burgeoned further, but he understood that no more details would be forthcoming. “I’m exceedingly sorry to hear that.”

“As am I, to be the bearer of such news.” Lord Ingram’s voice was low, almost inaudible.

Treadles left Burlington House in a daze, hounded by dozens of unhappy conjectures. Had Holmes leaped from a perilous height armed with nothing but an unreliable parachute? Had he been conducting explosive experiments at home? Or had his brilliant but restless mind driven him to seduce the wrong woman, culminating in an illegal duel and a bullet lodged somewhere debilitating but not instantly lethal?

What had happened to the elusive and extraordinary Sherlock Holmes?

    Such a tragedy.

    Such a waste.

    Such a shame.

Wow! Can't Wait for the Next Book!
    By Judge Tabor
I'm a big Sherry Thomas fan and her book Not Quite a Husband is one of my all time favorites. In this most recent book, which is apparently the first book in a new detective series, our heroine is totally unique. Any description I could give of her persona wouldn't do her justice. Charlotte Holmes is a genius with a memory and insight into people and situations that are best described as out of this world. She didn't speak a full sentence until she was four years old but her lack of speech was not indicative of a lack of genius.

In truth, this book hit me in a personal way that was quite unexpected. I have two grandchildren - stunningly beautiful teen-age girls who were diagnosed with autism when they were ages 3 and 5. Their delayed speech and the eventual unveiling of amazing gifts in certain areas such as memory and music gave me personal insight into Charlotte, even in one area that was so lacking - that being the set of filtering skills that are so necessary to navigate through the levels of Society and relate in what is often considered a "normal" and acceptable manner to others.

leaving aside the personal, Charlotte was simply unlike any type of heroine I've read about in this genre. During the first few pages, we are thrown into a much different scenario and type of behavior than one would expect from a heroine during the Victorian era. I won't give away the happenings in the first few pages, but the end result is that our unique girl winds up leaving home and setting out to try and make a life for herself rather than be banished to the outback of Society in a small cottage. Charlotte does have some friends, including her sister, Olivia, who is her bosom bud. We soon learn that she has another friend - that would be a gentleman who is introduced to us as Lord Ingram Ashburton, however, since he is married, he surely can't be her love interest, can he?

If you're looking for a lovely romantic story, it's simply not going to happen in this first book. For the first 62% of the book, few clues are given about Charlotte's and Ingram's relationship. This may not please some readers. They've known one another for years and years, but there's very little about their relationship in this book. I suspect their relationship will be built upon during the next books in the series with parts of their past slowly revealed. Rather, this story deals primarily with Charlotte's amazing gifts that will pave the way for her to be the perfect person to eventually be set up as "Sherlock Holmes" - Sherlock replacing "Charlotte" because in that day and age, the world wasn't ready to accept a female in the role of a detective.

Suffice it to say there is a mystery to be solved - one involving three deaths that at first appear to be unrelated. When it becomes obvious that Olivia might be accused of having something to do with one of the murders, Charlotte decides she must communicate certain questions and insights about the deaths of the three people that would appear to indicate the deaths are related on some level. To do this, she writes a letter to the coroner and outlines her thoughts, signing the note as "Sherlock Holmes" resulting in everyone wondering exactly who Mr. Holmes is.

The storyline spends a fair amount of time fleshing out the characters that are certain to be prominent in future stories, including the introduction to the woman who will be Holmes' sidekick, Mrs. Watson. The person to whom the clues are sent is an Investigator Treadwell - again, his character is fully fleshed out with details about his marriage, his background, even his clothing to the point, we feel as though we really do know this gentleman and his wife - obviously a saint of a woman who married down, but loves her husband.

The underlying story behind the murders is an ugly one that I won't go into in this review. I actually felt as though the main investigation headed up by Treadwell with Holmes providing continuing helpful insight, was a little slow moving for much of the book. Nevertheless, there was a lot of groundwork to build upon if the series is to be successful and indeed, we have a great start in this first book.

If you're not a fan of "whodunit" types of stories, this book may not work for you. In fact, although I'm a huge fan of the Sebastian St. Cyr / Captain Lacey / Lady Julia Grey books, this series will add an element none of those series have - that being a female protagonist who has nearly superhuman abilities relative to memory, recall and level of genius.

**Spoilerish** I had a couple of difficulties with the storyline for which I will not take away any stars. The premise that the love interest for Charlotte is a married man that she has obviously encouraged in the past and in the present in unacceptable ways, troubled me because I personally believe this type of behavior is dishonest and dishonorable. One other thing that is shocking within the first few pages, is the behavior that Charlotte engaged in that resulted in her having to leave home. Once certain aspects of her character are revealed, her behavior is understood - not condoned by me, but I understood her persona better which allowed me to give her more grace. I know, I know I sound like a prude, but there it is. I dislike my heroine to be involved with a married man, although to Ingram's credit, he refuses to be involved with her in that way at least in this book with one exception. As for Charlotte, well she doesn't look at life through the acceptable filters of Society which in many ways is vastly appealing, but not in matters of honor.

I loved the book. I look forward to more.

    Magnificent!
    By L. S. Tucker
All Charlotte Holmes wanted was independent means to support herself and, ultimately, her sisters. Unfortunately, her revenge against her father for broken promises blows up into public scandal. Unwilling to be banished to the country, Charlotte runs away in search of her own life. It isn't until she meets widow Mrs. John Watson that a past exercise in deduction as Sherlock Holmes turns into an occupation.

Wow. I bought this book due to a review by Carrie S. in Smart Bitches, Trashy Books blog. I was hoping it would be as good as Carrie thought, but it was even more so. The characters are so well-drawn and different than the usual cast of characters.

We have Charlotte, who may be somewhat autistic, based on her dislike of touching, her difficulties in understanding emotions. I don't mean she has no emotions of her own, because that is anything but true. What Charlotte does have is a most observant and analytical mind.

Her friend from childhood, Lord Ingram Ashburton, had been giving her an outlet for her intelligence as intermediary with Inspector Robert Treadles. Until the scandal breaks.

Livia Holmes, her sister, overlooked by everyone except Charlotte. Desperate to be free of their mother's tyranny. Supportive of Charlotte, even while worrying about her sister's safety.

Bernadine Holmes, mentioned but not met. A young woman who retreated into herself, mentally unengaged with anything except spinning things. Beloved by Charlotte, possibly more than any of the others in the family.

Roger Shrewsbury, who never had much of a chance with the women in his life.

Lady Holmes, the mother of the girls, is at first glance a horrible woman. But a deeper look shows how many disappointments she has had, from her marriage to the inability to produce a son and heir to having two daughters who aren't quite...right.

As always in a society that focuses on the importance of men and morality, the real villains are not those first brought to mind. The mystery wasn't the important part of this book, it was the people. Most of them women struggling to survive, to find a way to use their skills despite society's disapproval. I cannot wait for the next installment in this series. And I do hope that Robert Treadles and his beloved wife make it through this patch of his insecurity.

I tagged this as mystery/adventure, rather than romance, because it isn't a typical romance. There is definitely love within the pages, some happy, some not so happy. I would call the ending Happily for Now in regards to some, others having a painful wake-up call. Whatever genre, if you like quality writing with strong female characters, this is the book for you. 5 out of 5.

3-1/2 Stars. A Promising Start Limps to an Unsatisfying Conclusion
    By Lauren Sophie
As a longtime lover of all things Sherlock Holmes and an admirer of Sherry Thomas' immense talents, I thought I would absolutely adore this book. And for the first 50 pages or so I was definitely smitten. The narrative is a clever homage to the Arthur Conan Doyle series, but Thomas makes Charlotte Holmes very much her own creation. The writing is smooth and the setting is fully fleshed out, with lots of little mysteries and some bigger ones along the way.

But by the middle of the novel, my attention started to flag. One issue for me is that in the first half of the book we shift around quite a lot in time. This is similar to some of the original Holmes' tales, but in this novel, it ends up slowing down the pace and at times is more confusing than enlightening. Also, I agree with others who observed that we really didn't need Treadle's pov. It bogs down the narrative and again slows down the pace.

The romance, such as it is, is intriguing but at this point, since the hero is married and refuses to take Charlotte on as his mistress, there's not much to say about it.

Finally, it took way, way too long for the central mystery to be solved. I admit, I got bored with it and rushed to the end. Too much back and forth; too much Treadles and his happy marriage; too much of a reliance on epistolary reveals. That's a shame, because as I said, I savored the story in the beginning.

I think there's potential here for a great series, as the characters are wonderful. But in the next installment, I'd like to see a brisker pace, tighter narrative, and more romance.

“In this timely book, Buhner reveals that plants are the people’s medicine, possessing attributes that pharmaceuticals never will.”

“Humans have misused antibiotics to the point that these drugs are becoming worthless. In Herbal Antibiotics, Buhner argues that by turning to plants for healing, we would be working with nature―and improving our chances of surviving the superbugs.”

“A comprehensive introduction worthy to be on the shelf of any holistic practitioner, herbalist, farmer or parent. The book … shows an appreciation for the melding of traditional practices, tools, and wisdom with modern research and insight.”

    From the Back Cover
The Essential Guide to Building Your Natural Defenses

Bacterial infections are on the rise, and pharmaceutical antibiotics are increasingly powerless to stop them. Pathogenic bacteria are tenacious survivors; they outsmart modern medicine and become virulent "superbugs," resistant to antibiotics and increasingly deadly.

Stephen Harrod Buhner offers conclusive evidence that plant medicines, with their complex mix of multiple antibiotic, systemic, and synergistic compounds, should be our first line of defense against resistant infections. His indispensable reference explains the roots of antibiotic resistance, explores the value of herbal treatments, and provides in-depth profiles of the most reliably effective herbs, giving you the confidence to identify the best herbal formulas and make medicines yourself.

    About the Author

Stephen Harrod Buhner is the author of Herbal Antivirals, Herbal Antibiotics (now in its second edition), and 17 other works including Herbs for Hepatitis C and the Liver, Sacred Plant Medicine, The Lost Language of Plants, The Secret Teachings of Plants, and Ensouling Language. He speaks internationally on herbal medicine, emerging diseases, complex interrelationships in ecosystems, Gaian dynamics, and musical/sound patterns in plant and ecosystem functioning. He is a tireless advocate for the citizen scientist, the amateur naturalist, and community herbalists everywhere. He lives in New Mexico.

    Natural Antibiotics
    By Books and Chocolate
This is a valuable reference with information on herbal alternatives to standard antibiotics. Antibiotic-resistant infections and "super bugs" are becoming a challenge to standard medicine. According to the author over 70 percent of all pathogenetic bacteria in hospitals are found to be at least minimally resistant to antibiotics. The book explores the root of antibiotic resistance and looks at the value of herbal treatments with profiles of thirty herbs known for their antibiotic properties. Also included are methods for collection and preparation, dosages, potential side effects, and alternatives.

While the topic of antibiotic-resistance can be alarming, I appreciated that this book didn't take a doomsday, fearful tone but instead presents the facts based on research and studies, and the author offers hope with valuable information on herbal remedies. Some of the information is rather scientific but is written in terms an average person can understand and the home remedy recipes are easy to follow. Although I haven't actually made any of the remedies yet, the herbs required are those I can find at my local health food store or online, or I could grow some of them myself. It's also important to note, as the author does, that herbs can have side-effects and can affect how other medicines work if both are taken together. In the profiles of the herbs, the potential side-effects are noted.

Remedies include those for ear infections, skin infections, relieving the symptoms of colds and flu, boosting the immune system, and much more.

This is a good resource to have on hand as a natural alternative to antibiotics and other medications that may not be as effective as they used to be.

I received a copy of this book for review from the publisher but the opinion of it is my own and was not solicited, nor was a positive review required.

Has potential for energetic healers and muscle testers too
    By Bruce Dickson
A well-organized 468 pages and very good. This is WORLDWIDE herbology, the best herb for the job, irrespective of country or culture. Does not address the energetic angle of interpreting illness as Messages from the Body, but short of that, the best textbooks I've ever seen on herbs for antibiotic use.

The below is a view of this work from an energetic persepctive; that is, what can be tested with muscle testing of any kind, towards solutions for your self and for patrons.

General rules of thumb for dealing with resistant infections

    Systemic infection ~ try: Cryptolepis
Severe diarrhea, dysentery ~ try berberine herbs, any
Urinary tract infection ~ try: Juniper berry combined with bidens
Infected surface or surgical wound ~ try: Honey has always worked
Menningitis ~ try: Add piperine, isatis and others are suggested

    (abbreviated from p. 45)

Buhner reminds of the distinction between bacteria with one cell wall and two cell walls. Gram positive bacteria are stainable because they have only one cell wall. Gram negative bacteria are not stainable as they have two cells walls. This distinction is therefore a possible distinction to test for.

The main resistant Gram-positive (single cell wall) bacteria are:
    - Clostridium difficile
    - Enterococcus spp.
    - Mycobacterium tuberculosis
    - Staphylococcus aureus
    - Streptococcus spp.
    (abbreviated from Chap. 2)
Extensive detail on how to deal herbally with each and its variats follows.

The main resistant Gram-negative (double cell wall) bacteria are:
    acinetobacter baumannii
    campylobacter jejuni
    E. coli
    haemophilus influenzae
    klebsiella pneumoniae
    neisseria gonorrhoeae
    proteus spp.
    Pseudomonas aeruginosa
    salmonella spp. (including S. typhi...)
    serrata marcescens
    shigellia spp. (including dysentariae...)
    stenotrophomonas maltophilia
    vibrio clolerae
    (abbreviated from p. 54)
Extensive detail on how to deal herbally with each and its variats follows.

SYSTEMIC herbs ~ These herbs travel to all parts of the body when ingested:

    Cryptolepis, Sida, Alchornea, Bidens, Artemisia.

LOCALIZED NON-SYSTEMICS ~ these herbs do not easily cross the GI tract membrane. They concentrate in the bloodstream. This limits them effectively to the GI tract, skin or certain organs (he explains more):

    The berberines, Juniper, Honey, Usnea

SYNERGISTS ~ three he likes are: licorice, ginger and black pepper.

A wealth of thoro detail on all aspects follows.

    This is a power-house book!
    By Anthony Esau
We loved it because we are both health care professionals. This man has really done his research! We have some
of his other books too, like Healing Lyme. They are all very helpful if you would rather keep your health in your own
hand, rather than handing it over to someone else.
