Most written histories intend to be accurate, but they often suffer from the bias of perspective, and whilst this history of the Anglo-Zulu War is no exception, it is exceptional in that it is decidedly not a view of the conflict from an Imperial British standpoint. Francis Colenso was the daughter of Bishop Colenso, whose Bishopric included Zululand at the time of the war. She knew the Zulu nation well, had an affection for it and in company with her father was an ardent advocate in its cause. She was well aware of the many shameful calumnies perpetrated against it by the British including the bringing about of the war of 1879 itself. This history, written by an author who was on the spot, was originally published very shortly after the events themselves took place. It provides a very different view, far removed from a story of Imperial glory or folly. Ultimately the traditional Zulu way of life was destroyed by the war and the injustice and tragedy of that is painfully elaborated in these pages. 'Fanny' Colenso had a close personal relationship with Colonel Anthony Durnford, who fell at Isandlwana and who became one of Lord Chelmsford's scapegoats for the disaster. For the military aspects of her history she called upon the assistance of Durnford's brother, Edward—also a soldier—to provide vital expertise, credibility, accuracy and authority. This is the first and possibly the most important history of the Zulu War and the events that bought it about and is an essential component of any library of the history of South Africa.

A well written novel that clearly demonstrates objectively how little misunderstandings can cost many lives with little gain by either party.
A proud warrior like native population that for thousands of years lived a simple live. A proud Nation with a historic battle tested military tradition of winning with exceptional strategy and tactics on the battlefield. Their confrontation leads to heroic deeds by the Soldiers standing steadfast in the face of imminent death with no quarter given. A must read.

The effects of dominance

This is a collection of stories from students who voice their personal struggles, express their pain, and address the injustice they have encountered due to racism in today's society. Their powerful stories touch on changing physical appearances, names, and accents in order to conform to the standards set by white dominance. Once you read this book it will open your eyes to the existing glass ceilings, the unspoken inequalities, and prejudices people are faced with on a daily basis. Through Voices of Pain Voices of Hope Dr. Jerome Rabow explores issues such as superiority amongst white dominance and the ideology of increasing your own value, and position at the expense of those from your won race, and others. His writing is both informative and powerful. Jerome Rabow sheds light on the issues America has been struggling with, and acknowledges the pain of those who have encountered racism. This by far is an exceptional book many can learn and benefit from.

Rabow takes a look at institutionalized racism on one of the most premiere campuses in the United States: UCLA. Good, but liked the previous editon style better

I got this based on a number of online recommendations and after looking at a copy of the 2nd edition version. I already have one book that reads more like a text book (and its very good), so part of the reason I got this one was the 2nd ed was more study guide style which is what I wanted (direct, to the point, bullet point type listing of stuff rather than wordy explanations, excercises, etc etc). However they changed it so the 3rd edition is more text book like than study guide style. So I would say that if you don't have any other prep material, this is a good book to get. If you already have other study material, maybe only get this one if you aren't fully satisfied or comfortable with the material you have. I don't know that it would really tell you much different information otherwise, except maybe the first chapter that discusses more about the test, test taking tips, and the viewpoint of PMI so you have a better understanding of their mindset when it comes to PM (again, other good prep materials or classwork may cover alot of this anyways...) If you already have study material then you may be more interested in their exam simulation software.

Also be aware that there have been corrections made to the book, which the publisher has a list of on their site.

Be cautious buying a used version, and make sure you have all the details of the condition it is in. I had to return the one I bought because it wasn't in useable condition (though it was described as being in good condition). It had the study exercises filled in, and a lot of pages cut out, and marked up with so much pen/highlighter it just wasn't even suitably readable. If they don't have these kind of details listed, then I'd contact the seller to ask, or just buy new.

I have this, and used it and the RMC CAPM Test Software (a separate product) to complete my preparation for the CAPM examination. I took about 5 weeks to gradually review everything, and get to the point where I could reliably 93% (including a couple of stupid mistakes per test) on the timed Practice Exams (on the separate software product). The material and test questions in this book are a subset of those provided by the separate software product.

I passed the CAPM Exam (the real one) about 2 hours prior to this posting.

Therefore, I recommend this book.

However.

Not one of the questions provided in either this book or the practice software were on the real exam. Not one.

Many were kind-of close, and the book and practice test software did get me up to speed on the current PMI version. I passed, and that's the point. However, reading the book thoroughly, and brushing up on PMBOK v5 will probably result in a better grade on the test.

The public consensus is, and has been for several years, that the RMC products are among the best, if not the best, and I agree. However, by Question 25, it was clear to me that I had to rely on knowledge of PMI theory, principles, processes, etc. (really, the point of the test) and not on just "prep". Further, some of the terms (which are testable) are likely only in PMBOK.

Again, I recommend this book, because it did and does work. Just be prepared to spend more than a few hours finding answers in PMBOK

A definite asset to help you pass a hard exam

I picked up this book based on the positive reviews and recommendations from friends. Studying for the CAPM was not exactly fun, but this book made it easier, and the practice exams at the end of each chapter were really helpful in summarizing the material. In short, you need to know your ITTOs (inputs, tools, techniques and outputs). I also purchased the supplementary practice exam software to give me a better idea of what an actual exam would look like...and that was especially helpful because it tells you which knowledge areas you need to improve on.

Still fun in the 3d installment. Great narration of the audiobook!

Uh oh. Is Fox going back to his old ways? Is O'Hare going rogue? The latest is a personal revenge job for one of Fox's former colleagues. Nashville, Istanbul, France, Portugal, London... The globetrotting duo will go anywhere, and spare no expense to bring down the drug lord who has the misfortune of being in their crosshairs. Once again, they assemble the A-Team - an actor, Somali former-pirate, the bombshell who can drive any vehicle, a former Marine or two, and a tree house carpenter. They add a Hollywood CGI tech and a ship engineer to round out the crew.

I've read quite a bit of Evanovich in the past. To me, this doesn't seem like her usual slapstick. Goldberg, then, must have a very large role in the writing, which I appreciate. While the characters are still quite two dimensional, we're starting to get a bit more sense of what makes Fox and O'Hare tick. The main characters are slightly more mature (both in age and mentality) than the usual Evanovich characters. Still, the book is pretty much an action movie put to paper. Don't expect more than a fun read. I can only hope that the characters sort out their personal baggage and connection before the 25th book in the series. There's only so many times that we can read the same book (only locales and con targets changed) before the series will grow tiresome.

The audiobook is absolutely perfect. Every voice is spot on! I traveled to each locale, thanks to the narrator's accents.

Evanovich writes fun, bond-like character in foreign setting

Nick Fox has more than 9 lives. It's fun to have an international setting of the Nick Fox & FBI agent Kate fighting to catch bad guys "covertly". This job was the take-down of a drug lord who had changed this appearance with plastic surgery and was impossible to locate up to now. Leave it to Evanovich to use a love of fine chocolate to help identify him. In the Stephanie plum series there's always cake and donuts, in this sophisticated bond-like it's real gold-coated chocolates. Mix in a long sought after ship wreck and a con at sea. All of the prior characters used in the last Nick/Kate con are back. The usual sexual tension/relationship between Nick and Kate is growing. Kate is not lured by the finer things in life... She likes her Denny's grand slam breakfast, Coke and Toblerone! Love the many fascinating locales of this book!

Good Job!

Another great book by Janet Evanovich and her fun duo of Fox and O'Hare. The more I read about these two, the more I want to read. This team she has put together just fits perfectly and then you put Kate's dad in with them and it really adds extras to the stories. I liked this storyline but would love to see Nick and Kate a little more involved. If they like each other that much, make it a little more interesting between them. I love the cons they perform to get their "men" in the pursuit of justice. I would like to read more in with the side characters who help pull the cons too but in all I loved this book. Highly recommend it.

A must for any EC teacher's library

I rarely review textbooks, but this one deserves a huge shout-out. We're using this for a graduate-level special education course, and although I'm nearly finished with the program and have been working as an EC teacher for a couple of years, there's still loads of information in this textbook that I've never seen represented before. For example, none of my textbooks has ever shown a chart of which IQ ranges correspond to mild, moderate, severe, and profound intellectual disability. The organization of topics is thoughtful, and it's nice to have entire chapters devoted to learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral disorders, hearing loss, blindness, and gifted/talented students; these topics often get shortchanged (or are completely overlooked) in textbooks for teacher-preparation programs focusing on severe/profound disabilities. Although I've rented the e-textbook for the semester, I'll be paying the difference to purchase it once the rental period has expired.

Informative, but Visually Overwhelming

To "Go New" or not: That is the question.

I wouldn't, but I already have my M.Ed. If you're just starting your career as a teacher, or just starting to learn about becoming a teacher--especially of exceptional children--you'll probably get a lot of use out of this text. It's an excellent reference.

Indeed, this books has a ton of information in tiny print on glossy pages. It breaks up information to insert helpful teaching aides or stories about teachers doing the right things--which, on their surface are very helpful. I have no complaints about the content. But the format! The organization! Ugh.

THINGS TO NOTE:

When I'm reading about a technical topic, I don't want the information interrupted mid-paragraph or mid-section for a two-page spread about a teacher who is using a technique I read about three or four pages ago (or will read about in another page or two, under a separate subheading). Finish the section and then give me examples, or give me examples and then explain them in the section. Don't break up an unrelated section just to put in your colorful insert (and they are very colorful) before the chapter ends.

More, I don't want to see charts several pages away from the information they're trying to explain. I don't want two or three pages of charts in the middle of one section of text. I hate flipping back and forth, and flipping back and forth feels like all I do with this book.

OVERALL:

Again, the content is wonderful. I found the text balanced, fair, insightful, helpful, and up-to-date. But I couldn't get past the formatting. You go from walls of text where bold, italics, and sub-sized fonts run rampant to big, colorful splashes filled with more content, to two-page inserts complete with pictures, to charts with small font, back to tons of text--and few of the beautiful, colorful features make a lot of sense where they are placed. The reading experience is visually overwhelming, and the organization within the chapters is awful.

That said, the overall organization of the book is very nice--it builds well--and the chapters are informative. I would have preferred more information and techniques for "gifted and talented" children (they do get one chapter), but that isn't really the focus of this book. As a broad overview, it does its job--and it's obvious why this is a common choice for education classes. Just be prepared to read with your sunglasses on, and have your fingers poised for constant flipping.

Bad Access Code

The access code I received did not work. When I contacted Pearson's tech support, they told me the code was "incompatible" with the book and I would have to get a refund. I contacted Pearson a second time and insisted they resolve the issue, at which point they expired the unworkable code and gave me a new one. All in all, I spent roughly an hour fixing this. I was not pleased.

Must read.

I was recommended reading this book after The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Both books are life changing, not in a dramatic new way to live type of way but more in a slight shift in perspective that allows you to approach your person life differently; better. I would highly recommend this book as well as The Alchemist for those not afraid to feeling and think outside the box. Both are amazingly written and beautiful novels. I will be re-reading both throughout the remainder of my life.

This book can enhance your life in ways you can't even begin to imagine, it did so with my life. The life lessons this book contains are vital for anyone that just wants to be happy. From learning to focus on the positive to loving yourself and inspiring other. All these lessons and more are wrapped up in a beautiful story that doesn't try to preach, but just shows you that there is an amazing reality right next to you waiting for you to explore it.
I personally recommend Baudlina to anyone that wishes to just be happy.

Excellent, with caveats.

Great inspiration that is also a bit disappointing. There are a few projects that were a bit too similar, and one project that would require you to purchase a specially fabricated piece via one of the designers. The instructions are quite good, overall (at least one project directs you to the Internet for detailed dimensions ). Even with those flaws, I still feel the book is a worthwhile purchase for inspiration and instruction.

This book is loaded with DIY projects that look like high end modern art/decor, but they're all so doable. I'm excited to make the chair. The instructions are so clean and clear, and I can see myself doing several of the projects, not just one or two. We're fans of Phaidon books around here. There are several that grace our bookshelves. This is definitely a favorite.
